I genuinely enjoy the Super Mario World cartoon even though it's dumb. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I like seeing the characters from one of my favorite games fleshed out a bit more.

Earthworm Jim too. That game basically is a Tex Avery style cartoon disguised in a platform game.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within is probably my favorite video game-based movie.
Also, it's a really underrated classic.
I'm glad that it's getting more recognition in recent years.

It's just like Titan A.E., Atlantis: The Lost Empire, and Treasure Planet, in that they are animated action-adventure sci-fi films which were released in the early-2000s bombed in the box office, but later on became cult classics.

To be fair, there're as many Final Fantasy series connections in that as there are in any given Final Fantasy game.

To be even fairerer, it at does feel more connected than piece of shit pic related

Still, "cult classic" >>4439541 feels a bit too generous. It was kind of a novelty then and now it's less than that

What exactly is underrated about it? It was a technically beautiful movie and everyone at the time acknowledged this but pretty shit in all other aspects. I honestly watched it when I was a big fan of everything Final Fantasy, both old and new, to the point where I could convince myself that eating a pile of dogshit in the shape of a Cactuar would be a worthy endeavor, and I just couldn’t bring myself to like it.

Not one bit.

Kirby anime. Technically not retro since it's sixth gen and covers air ride, but the main plotline is Kirby's Adventure, so it's still retro.

Gainax and NHK didn't even bother suing Disney because they knew nobody can win against their lawyers, but it was obvious.

> Muh THE MOUSE

Lion King is a worse example, but honestly: who cares. Truth is, the worth of both Disney movies lies in the execution, not the concept (Atlantis is not worth that much anyway). The artists probably wouldn't have cared about openly acknowledging the "inspirations" since they are so fucking obvious, but that sort of thing doesn't compute with management and PR.

It's sort of like how Resident Evil is officially supposed to have been inspired by Sweet Home, a previous Capcom cult classic, and totes not by Alone in the Dark

Goemon's TV series is pretty comfy. The characters are on point, the story is as cliche as it gets but for a kid it's great. Basically a kid is playing "Goemon X" on his not-N64 and suddenly characters from the game come out of the TV, both villians and heroes. Basically it's the typical way to self-insert you as the kid and go into adventures with Goemon and his friends. It's like Darkstalkers cartoon but well done.
It's very kid-oriented, but it still has some good humor and cool fight scenes.
The OVA is a lot weirder. The tone of it is a bit unsettling, has darker humor, and I think the characters are a bit off, but it's still worth watching for the absurd of it.

The other vidya cartoon thread inspiried me to actually watch Captain N for the first time. I think it's all on youtube. Quite a bit of it is anyway. It's an odd show. It's as if the character designer is going entirely by description given to him via various games of telephone. Like with a lot of the 'generic enemy monster' designs I can see how someone could've imagined that looking at the game sprites, but with other characters they just go full fucking wacky.
Ripe for reaction images, that show
