I noticed that too a few weeks ago at a flea market, some vendor had two different versions, one with a smaller mario and yoshi with text on two lines, another where they are bigger and the text is one line.

My guess is one was bundled with the console, the other retail.

I unironically prefer the Genesis SR. The SNES port is basically a dumbed-down version of the arcade game (you could just be playing the arcade game, it's 2017, you don't need to rely on subpar home ports anymore), whereas the Genesis version is almost a completely brand-new game, plus it's more challenging than either the SNES or arcade games.

If you like the Genesis version more than that's fine but the SNES version is undeniably a better port of the arcade game. But the Genesis version still has the same bosses, stages, characters, weapons, music, etc as the second half of the arcade game but missing half the game so I'm not really seeing it.
