After having played the PC and PS1 versions of this game quite extensively, I had a copy of the N64 version fall into my hands recently, and I have to say... wow, this is easily my favorite. I'd even say this is right up there with Perfect Dark as one of the best shooters on the console.

>surprisingly good graphics
>cool ambient soundtrack similar to Doom 64
>fully customizable controls
>the only version of the game to have muzzle flash
>super fun 4-player splitscreen
>runs at a pretty rock solid framerate 99% of the time
>great level design
>various quality of life changes that make the game more fast and frantic, like removing hand grenades and giving you the grenade launcher earlier
>only version of the game to have all brand new levels designed only for N64
>lots of cheats and secrets

Great fucking game. My only complaint is that the weapon animations are choppy for a few guns, but I'll take a few less animation frames over no muzzle flash any day. Anyone else play this and really enjoy it?

Quake II on the N64 IS fantastic. Interesting that Doom gets so much praise for being a new version, but Quake II isnt mentioned.

Unfortunately I think this game suffered from the fate of many people (myself included) thinking it was a straight PC port and not an original game. Really happy I found this though, it's a great middle point between Doom 64 and the Rare shooters. Sucks that more people will pass it over without realizing how cool it is.

Fucking excellent version of the game.

The 4 player split-screen is the coolest shit.

No I haven't, I've heard the N64 version is the best though. Looks cool, but the lack of any actual guns on screen is kind of off-putting.
>>4432208
Agreed. I wish I had more people to play it with. Great selection of maps and weapons. I'm really seriously surprised by how much I'm enjoying it, normally the PC version of a game is always my preference but damn, the level design, multiplayer and special touches in this game really set it apart for me.

So just like Doom 64?

>> No.4432262

>>4432253
Yeah, but Doom 64 at least had the advantage of having a different visual style, so at least those who saw it could tell it was different. Quake 2 is different in everything but the actual graphics, so I imagine that a lot of people who even saw it in person were fooled.

it doesnt run well though, even with expansion pack it feels like it constantly dips into the 10s. also the controls are awful, not really a fault of the game but still

>> No.4432975

Quake 2 is actually the only 3D console game of that generation to run in 24-bit color (with Expansion Pak), which is a pretty cool detail since even the Voodoo 3 card for PC didn't do that.

>>4432638
It never gets that low. The game does look misleadingly choppy because of the terrible weapon animations though. It also has a bit of a stuttering / framepacing problem. The actual average framerate is pretty decent all things considered.

>> No.4433558

>>4432403
Know what really looks like dogshit? Guns with no muzzle flash. Seriously, using a fucking chaingun and you can't even see that you're firing? That's fucking retarded. The choppy animation is only really noticeable for a few guns anyway, never bothered me.
>>4432638
It runs fine, even gets up to 60fps in some areas. Also, the controls are not different than any other shooter on the console, you can fully customize them. Use dpad for movement and stick for aiming. If you can't make that work, I guess you just suck.

>> No.4433564

Quake 2 is the worst id shooter so it's no wonder people forget about it. It was all downhill after Q1.

That blurry diarrhea you call muzzle flash as well as the chaingun animation looks like absolute trash. I would rather mod them into the base game than subject myself to an inferior version.

Quake 2 has more people online than Quake 3 so yes I am including it. The only people that really still play Q3 are CPMA and E+ players which is mainly just 1v1 at certain times of day for CPMA.

Blurry diarrhea? Lmao, welcome to retro games brother. Now I get it, you're just a typical PC zealot whose inferiority complex comes to the surface any time somebody brings up a console game.

I love all versions of Quake 2, but I can't live without the cheesy heavy metal soundtrack. For that reason, and a few other minor ones, I have more fun with the PS version.

The PS port of Doom breaks my heart for the same reason, I need that original music.

>> No.4435394

I quite literally played the PlayStation port of Quake 2 at least 10 times through, maybe twenty (I was obsessed with the game as a kid) but I always missed one secret in the first chapter. Was the secret tally broken?

ah come on, Quake Live is the continuation of Quake 3 and is much more popular. Even if QL is technically not retro (arguable) you are not being intellectually honest.

Well it is more of a flying game than it is a first person shooter, so that is why there are no guns on the screen since youre supposed to be looking out the cock pit. Not sure why that anon recommended it because of Quake 2, but it is a real good game. Even liked the multiplayer mode.

>> No.4437720

The only thing I never understood about that version of Quake 2 is why the animations were not interpolated. It made it look like Quake 1 with a new coat of paint in that respect.

That said, it was a rather good game, and one of the few games on N64 that had a capture the flag mode.

>> No.4437756

I grew up with this game, played multiplayer all the time with my brother.

I was really disappointed by GoldenEye when I heard about (mainstream) popularity that game had. Hard to enjoy it when I was comparing it to Quake2.

Same thing happened when I tried Starfox 64 after growing up on Star Wars Rogue Squadron; it just didn't compare

>> No.4437783

I guess they were trying to save on space. Additional frames meant for additional size taken. Whoever ported maybe didn't put much importance on them.

The game has all the key frames, interpolationg is shifting the model's vertices between the frames. Costs no extra storage.
