This is a contrarian opinion I can actually agree with.
I don't mind the variety or "gimmicky" levels. Regular EWJ gameplay and level design isn't that great anyway. I play Jim for the zany humor, sprite animation and music, not for the gameplay.
EWJ2 was more ambitious and had new mechanics. Some really shitty and frustrating levels but it's not like 1 didn't have them.
However, I think EWJ1 did atmosphere better. That level set in hell or whatever is amazing, nothing like that on 2 (well, puppy love on Saturn had a "hellish" background, but it's more like "hell's hot springs" looks kinda comfy, instead of 1's actual hell.

DKC2 is one of the best games I've ever played, a very deep experience that subtly gives its story through stages and it has a very well laid out world where everything flows seemlessly from level to level, there's a purpose to the level order as you make your way through a fully realized pirate themed island. DKC1 was more disjointed in that regard, you could swap plenty of levels with no consequence. DKC2 has better graphics and music too, and a point to unlocking everything. Plus Dixie is just flat out the most fun character in the series for her flight alone

Unlike movies, the 2nd Game in a series is usually the best entry, where the mechanics have been refined but no superfluous gimmicks have yet been added as often are in subsequent entries. Think of Mega Man 2, Street Fighter 2, Streets of Rage 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Donkey Kong Country 2, Virtua Fighter 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Just Cause 2 etc.

>dat classic italian music
>dat impressive depth of field and use of parallax scroll to simulate 3D

I swear, people who hate this game just suck at it because they probably can't get good and don't realize the importance of changing direction and diving, or that you can even do it. Probably because they are emulation babbies and those controls were only explained in the instruction manual. There are occasionally instances where you have to sacrifice a few puppies, but that's part of the strategy.

You're going to be raped to death for having this opinion, but I completely agree with you. Yoshi's Island was a good game, but it doesn't hold a candle to Yoshi's Story. The graphics, music and atmosphere alone make it the better game, not to mention the far superior sense of weight/movement, the improved egg throwing mechanic, and of course, the lack of baby mario. I have yet to hear one legitimate reason for why YS isn't the better game that doesn't boil down to "too easy" or "too few levels", generally by people who were too retarded to realize that there were 24 levels requiring multiple playthroughs to see. I also like how the levels were circular in nature, with dozens of paths weaving in and out through different areas. After 20 years, I'll still occasionally stumble upon an area I've never seen before. Great game.

The "gameplay" is kindergarden tier
I don't even remember the final boss, whereas Yoshi's Island's final boss is still one of the best final boss out there
One of the most boring games in Mario canon besides the educational third party titles and even those are questionable if they even count

>raped to death
for sure, I don't even know where to begin explaining just how superior Yoshi's Island is, how about actual level design for starters, that progresses in each world?

>requiring multiple playthroughs
No there isn't, once you beat this toddler hand holding "game", you've seen it all. Bomberman Heroes has collectible items for more content, this has nothing except
>dozens of paths weaving in and out through different areas

>No there isn't, once you beat this toddler hand holding "game", you've seen it all.
And here would be one of the retards I mentioned. There are 24 levels, it is literally impossible to play all 24 in one play through, it takes about 4 or 5.
>which is absolutely useless.
How is it "useless" exactly? It's just a different way to progress through the levels, with different items, enemies, etc., along the way.

Posts like this are why I can't take YS haters seriously. They haven't even played the game and they'll shit on it. I'm truthfully glad you have convinced yourself not to actually play it though, a faggot like you doesn't deserve to play an awesome game like Yoshi's Story.

>Says the person who is justifying a literal toddler's game being great for having mazes in its handful of levels
The fact that your mind is somehow capable of distilling the entire experience into being a "toddler game with mazes" is pretty telling that you're the autistic one here.
>Wowee zowee a whole 24 levels, all of them having the same beginning AND end! Star Fox 64 did it way better. Do you really want to compare with Yoshi's Island's level count?
The same beginning and end? That doesn't even make sense. They end when you want them to end. Star fox 64 didn't do it "better" because you're comparing apples and oranges. You also can't compare YI's level count because they are flat, linear levels with no branching paths, it's a totally different approach to level design.
>How is it NOT? There are zero (0) consequences for going one way or another. Star Fox 64 has VERY different routes, there is no confusion whatsoever. Yoshi's Story? You beat the game, the children sing in its cringe theme EEYYYY YAAAA HA HOOOOOOOO the happy heart tree lives happily ever after with butterfly meadows and angels and happiness all around
Why do there need to be "consequences"? It just gives you something different to do and see. You play a level once, you go one way and maybe find different items/enemies than you did the last time you played. It's a good system. I also find it bizarre that you keep harping on the game for being some all this "cringe" and "happiness" when you're the one defending a literal babysitting simulator LOL.
>Oh kill yourself you trolling manbaby. The game is fucking garbage, utterly forgettable, will NEVER have a sequel or remake for how shit it is, while Yoshi's Island has had remakes and a sequel. It's shit, cry harder about it.

The ENTIRE Yoshi's Story experience makes absolutely zero effort in hiding the age demographic. Simple music, simple "gameplay", simple levels, simple boss, simple basic fucking bullshit. The fact that this is all amazing to you says alot of how arrested your development was, if we're going to get antsy and whiny and get personal, here.

>totally different approach to level design
Yeah, one is tremendously superior to the other. Different != Better, and in YS's case, it's horrible and forgettable except to people who are attched to it for whatever reason like you.
