What're the must plays? Tis' the season to scour Steam and Gog and get cozy up inside with a cheeky point and click, be it classic or one of the few recent releases.

>> No.4414818

Sierra was a big name in the adventure genre. Maybe check out King's Quest.

>> No.4414819

The first three Monkey Island games truly are must plays for the genre.

>> No.4414827

I've been playing some Sanitarium lately. It's half on steam. Would've been more fitting for halloween but ah well.

If you're looking for recent releases, I recommend Shivah, Gemini Rue and Blackwell series. They're made by the same devs (Wadjet Eye) who basically create LucasArts adventure games, today.
Also they all happen to be at the same time best detective games on the market, with 'notepad' mechanics implemented even better than Discworld Noir.

But that's not retro, so, idk. Longest Journey is retro by definition of this board, and I never see anyone here talk about it, and it's amazing.
It also has modern sequels, Dreamfall and Dreamfall Chapters.

I liked Beyond Atlantis/Atlantis II (never played the other games in the franchise). Blatant Myst knock off, but an interesting setting. Also really memorable trailer music

Timelapse is another ancient civilization Myst clone like Beyond Atlantis. Same developers as Timelapse (GTE Interactive Media) also created a Titanic and Wild West first person adventure game, though those are more talking focused but I liked them.

Shadowgate
There's a remake on Gog, or you can play the original Mac version of NES or whatever

The only adventure game I had as a kid besides the one in OP... I never got far in that one. I beat this one though, albeit I had help from my aunt and also played it with my mother.

I replayed it last year and it's better as an adult.

Just play the Pegasus Prime version (originally only released for Macintosh Power PCs back in the day), it got a crowd-funded Windows port a couple years ago. It's a whole five bucks on GOG right now:

The sequel was better. Buried in Time.
I actually played it first, and then played the original Journeyman.
Both very good games.
Never got to play the third entry though.

I really liked Shivers 2, pic related. It seems to get a lot of hate because it's totally unrelated to Shivers 1. But it's real cozy, kind of reminded me of Twin Peaks a little.

Shivers 1 is really fun too.

Machinarium and Samorost 1/2 were great fun. Samorost 3 was pretty good at the beginning, but it felt rushed later on.

>>4415229
>>4416106
Journeyman Project 1-2 were great, with great stories. 3 also had fun puzzles/settings, but the story was pretty bland in comparison, and your sidekick was really annoying (although as a kid I thought he was hilarious).
Also, this was kino: https://youtu.be/D4CY8G9gaFg

I would definitely NOT recommend playing Sierra *quest series. Product of its time (in the really bad way).
Go check out Riven: The sequel to Myst (and the original Myst, if you haven't already), also late Lucas arts games like Full Throttle and Grim Fandango.
Worth checking out: Shivers 1, The longest journey, Azrael's tear.

Dude those games were my childhood!

OP, another decent one was Blazing Dragons. Very funny, very fun, there's soem clever puzzles in it but nothing too terribly obtuse.

Was Toonstruck any good as an adventure, or was I a dumb-biased kid for loving it when released, because of my love for Christopher Lloyd and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Shivers is like being caught in a Scooby Doo cartoon where you inexplicably have to be insanely good at Chinese checkers. It is fun.

Shivers 2 is like being caught in a Soundgarden video except the Soundgarden is actually just a cover band who sucks dogshit and the only way to win is to be really good at guessing.
It is very much not fun.
