Why were sprite comics such a popular thing in the late 90s/early 2000s? These seem like a phenom totally exclusive to one generation of people. I wonder how they would have been different in the internet as it currently exists.

Aw shit that link has some good in it. Secret of Mana Theater is the first webcomic I know of to use flash animation for its presentation. The only animated comic I know off as its contemporary was Kid Radd, which made clever usage of animated gifs.

It's literally just because they were easy to make. Also, video games in that time were still for a large part sprite-based (handhelds, plus the SNES era was not oto long ago). Kids today don't see sprite art as commonly so obviously it'll be less popular.

Also, they didn't have access to the drawing tools web comic artists these days have. Aside from drawing and scanning your comics you'd be stuck using graphic design tools from the 90s or primitive drawing tablets to make your 'art'.

Compare the average Newgrounds submission today with that of 2000, and you'll see the massive difference in art quality. Not necessarily because artists got better, but because the tools did. That's the difference between digital art and conventional art. The latter hasn't seen as many noteworthy innovations.

We've really come a long way since Link's Quest for Ass.

Saying that they weren't popular is wrong though. Making them was popular, and a select few were also really popular. The demographic (primarily teenagers) might not have included you, but that didn't make them not popular. Teens aren't exactly a niche market, you know.

Just because Barbie dolls are liked primarily by girls doesn't make it unpopular since 'girls' isn't a niche market. Similarly, sprite comics and animations were really popular among the internet's teenage audience.

YouTube 'let's play' videos are today's variant of sprite comics. Easy to make, low quality, wildly popular but only with teenagers.

I remember reading this one back in 2002ish. I remember at some point the author got incredibly petty and made a mini series where the hero dies and the only way the king would revive him is if the main web comic got more popular than 8-bit theater. It was an extremely accessible form of expression for video game nerds back in an era where there was no Youtube. Most kids were into it simply because it was the cool thing to do and gave you nerd cred among your circle of friends and random strangers online.

In terms of form, their closest modern equivalent is machinima, except that actually requires talent for voice acting and editing. In terms of accessibility and proliferation, I would say the equivalent is having a Youtube gaming channel.

The gag comix turned world saving anime plots, the edgy Zero/Megaman X/Knuckles recolour OCs, the Family Guy jokes. I used to read them so much. I hated every second. I understand that sprite based web comics lost a lot of steam when the demographic familiar with them began to age, but it's pretty much a fact that at one point in time, they were enjoyed by a very large base of readers.

I wouldn't worry about it. This isn't the first sprite comic thread on /vr/. People only tend to bring up their fond memories of the good/popular ones like 8BT, B&G, Kid Radd, etc. The shitty sprite comics were a penny a dozen, so the odds of yours getting picked out from that vast ocean are astronomical.

One of my absolute favorites was a lesser-known one called Oldskooled.

He had an unhealthy obsession with underaged anime and cartoon girls (he modeled his author avatar as that chinese kid from Sakura Card Captor because he was obsessed with the protagonist) but we never paid much attention to it until we got links to other communities where he had made other accounts to promote his comics and constantly trying to befriend underaged kids. He refused to give us an explanation for his strange behavior and eventually left the community on his own.

His lack of an answer was ironically, a huge answer on itself.

Yep. It used to be a fun job but things quickly turned sour near the end of Dave's comic, all because we got so many conflictive users and Liss kept refusing to simply ban them all. To make things worse, we also had several members of the staff who kept causing drama and trouble because of their insane greed and unwarranted self importance, like for example Sytel, Chickbot, Infinity, Eternal Dreams and NGamer, who was made a moderator just to fill a void and the guy was so toxic, stubborn and invasive with the remaining users that he ended up killing the sprite rips and sprite requests subforums by simply pissing off all of our contributors until they left.

Dave was absurdly nice and humble, though. Seriously, you would think he would be all smug and proud over all the praise and attention he received all the time but the guy was practically Mr. Rogers.

ChickBot was on her late 20's (she must be on her mid forties now) and on top of being poor, overweight and having mental issues, she struggled really hard to convince everyone she was some kind of legendary celebrity entitled to praises and full obedience, so whenever somebody dared to disagree with her (either the readers or the admin staff) she immediately had a meltdown.
The IRC channel was also a pain whenever she joined in to brag, complain about people who criticrized her crappy comic (think of Sonichu, but with a female author) or when she simply felt like spamming crap to make everyone pay attention to her. Eventually she got banned from the channel (and she was warned many times) so she became more bitter, more greedy and more self entitled than ever, until the day she had a super meltdown on the admin board because it was her birthday and the entire site didn't made a super celebration to honor her, etc. After cursing and threatening everyone she quit the place, to tell a distorted version of the story to her (dumb) followers and play the victim act for all what was worth.

Nobody missed her when she left.

She milked the "Girl on the internet" gif for all what it was worth, and whenever other people's comics began turning popular she tried to get them under her grip, ESPECIALLY if the newcomers were female as well.

When Dave released the second Cataclysm movie, he accepted ChickBot's offer to draw art for it (the first movie had great hand drawn art for the final sequences) but ChickBot's crappy drawings were such a massive downgrade compared to the previous ones that the fans quickly complained and... well, you can guess the rest.

When her e-boyfriend (Gothic) finally had enough and dumped her, CB's reaction was immediately murder him in her comic, then drop the current arc and turn her comic into a blatant wish-fulfillment story that even her most loyal readers couldn't keep reading with a straight face anymore.
Honestly, she was like a happiness blackhole.

First of all, Disgruntled Fetter's comic was the absolute best of all so if you want to read some subcomics your first pick should be that one.

The Karnak's Show was a funny and deranged comic worth checking just for the fucked up gags alone.
Metroid Third Derivate was surprisingly good.

Dysfunction was another girl comic that was both hylarious and fucked up, so you shoulc check it as well. (ChickBot nagged and nagged until she got some cameos there.)

The Primer Chronicles is a "serious" comic that did reasonably well. It had an overowered OC (Allegro) that made it's way to Ferret's comic, with great results.

Warped Reallity is another absurdly funny comic you should check as well.

The rest of comics are... meh.

Unless you are talking about Kieran's comic, which was about X and a female Zero. It raised so much drama after too many newcomers were denied from having cameos there and so they began mass reporting the comic's violence as a petty revenge, which reached it's peak when Kieran made a single page where he had a naked (female) Zero staring at her reflection on a mirror before shattering it in fear.

It was supposed to be a dramatic moment (because of Zero and the Maverick virus corroding her mind) but it was like a christmas gift for all people with a grudge against Kieran, which included Sytel and her dog, aka Infinity.

I personally like that one by a guy named Disgruntled Ferret I think? I think it was called MS Paint Masterpieces. It turned Mega Man into a story with a pretty solid plot, aside from being funny when it needed to.

Funny thing is, Dave's originally wanted to make a hand drawn comic about two siblings (Bob and George) and used Megaman recolors as a placeholder comic to keep his potential readers entertained while he honed his drawing skills so he could start the real comic.
Problem is, Dave's drawing (and spriting) skills were simply inexistent, so the placeholder comic ended up becoming the real deal. He never denied this, and he never stopped thanking and crediting the kind people who helped him with customized sprites and characters whenever he needed them to keep the comic running.

I don't think I've ever seen another webfamous guy as nice and humble as him. (It's worth mentioning that Dave still could be a real ass whenever he felt like getting back at noisy people who kept bashing his comic and community out of envy or frustration because he refused to add their characters to his comic. This happened a lot.)

You didn't miss much of worth, to be honest. All of our popular authors had quit the place, either because they lost interest or because they got sick of the increasing drama that broke the community in the first place.
The reason were the same as elsewhere: power-hungry staffers and attention-seeking bottom fedders preying on popular authors to either steal and demand from them or to try blaming them for all of their own problems, etc.

Oh shit, the memories are coming back. My favorite was a 3-page sprite comic that I printed at middle school. Then me and my buddies kept adding drawings and extra jokes. By the end of the year it was covered in doodles and OCs. Good fucking times; I always wondered what happened to it.

Some were scratch made (the girls, Meowth and his author avatar) and other were heavy edits, like Gatomon and the bystanders. In fact, Maneko used to have a thread where he constantly released the unusual straight sprite rips and props he used on his comic for everyone else to use, and you always could find the weirdest, most fucked up things there.

MSPMP's unusual backgrounds, props and effects were mostly his doing, by the way.

Does anyone remember a Baldur's Gate II sprite comic that turned into a drawn comic towards the end? The hero was a female monk and there was a cheeky thief and an orc barbarian. I think it was called Adventure Incorporated or something like that. I can't find it anywhere.

Long ago, in a forgotten corner of the internet, I uploaded a Sonic/Final Fantasy/Phantasy Star crossover game I made. It was largely unpolished, not remotely finished and mostly shit, but at least I didn't use RPG Maker to cobble it together.
I don't even like Sonic very much. I just figured 'Mario RPG, why not Sonic RPG?'
For a while, I was concerned someone would find it and tear it apart here, but I doubt anyone cares enough to try to find it. Even I can't find it, ffs, mostly because I'd forgotten where the hell I'd put it in the first place. I also suspect that whereever it was that I put it, that site today likely exists only in the the darkest netherregions of archive.org.

I'd say it was more of a gradual increase in quality that never really stopped. Comics 100-200, for instance, are not near the level of quality that the later stuff is. It got good for a sprite comic very early on, but the later stuff was more than just good for a sprite comic or good for a webcomic.

The difference is (besides them both being much better authors in general) that they did it for the sake of some quick meta humor, while these sprite comics always do it for bullshit dramatic plotlines that never make any sense.

She basically made a huge wall of text full of drama, hyperbole and bullshit arguing that the entire community owed everything to her and she deserved to be praised as the legendary super star she was, etc. Then she logged off for good and went to her Deviant and Sheezyart accounts to tell her own version of the story where she demonized everyone and claimed to have been banned out of spite, except she was never banned, could have returned anytime and Liss even was willing to giver her another chance, which ChickBot simply refused because she was too broken to understand.

She COULD have continued Taco outside of BnG, except she refused to do anything without a loyal audience and so Taco died a pitful death.
