From my personal experience. I don't think anyone should play it. If I wanted a clusterfuck of a story I'd advise someone to watch bleach. I think the text speed is the main issue though, when it comes to a story, being unable to read it at your own speed is the worst.

Yes. It's kind of an artifact of its time and was too ambitious, but it's still a great game. Do play it in it Japanese if you can because the translation has problems.

Do not do this nephew. The best part of Xenogears is actually the music and playing it while you read is not the same.

The thing I always say about Xenogears is that about half of it is the greatest jrpg ever made or imagined, and the second half is the worst jrpg that ever actually got made.

It's filled with good ideas like backstory and a huge interstellar timeline and religious factions and science fiction and transmigration. It's got great music and amazing art and sometimes even amazing graphics, the combat system they came up with was fine and and the plot as it was would have been bullet proof if they'd followed the damn script.

But the whole game as it came together ended up being rushed and unfinished and over designed and under achieved, if they had done what they wanted to do that would have been great, but what they actually achieved with all the best ingredients at hand is garbage. The game is best enjoyed if you play it while imagining what the game could have been like or what it might be like if they remade it.

>> No.4413398

You're joking right? The gameplay is the only reason to play it. The plot is a shitty knockoff of the already completely overrated Evangelion that's somehow full of even more preachy bullshit and shits the bed halfway through.

The Evangelion comparison has never washed. Sure, there are countless topical similarities, but Xenogears at least tries to explain itself, characters have clear motivations, and there aren't many haughty metaphors, whereas Evangelion is just the worst kind of abstruse nonsense, incoherent feelings, and empty symbolism.

I didn't find anything special about it whatsoever. It was super cool on release for having decent sprites in a 3D environment but it's pretty ugly, LoM is a much prettier sprite-based game if we're sticking to PS1 Squaresoft territory. Back when, Xenogears was hailed "the game FFVII was supposed to be" because 2D art snobs learned that FFVII started out being sprite based and that's what splintered off into Xenogears. It's a way worse game than FFVII. It has some okay looking sprites in 3D environments that look like dookie complete with a camera that pans by itself in really awkward ways, to give you the full experience of suffering motion experience if you don't already.

Obviously I'm not a fan but it's still one of the standout RPGs of that era, it probably wouldn't hurt to give it a try if you're big into that genre.

Good thread to ask this in I think

What's the best way to emulate it on Android? I wanna play it by connecting it to my TV and using the DS4 but every emulator provides problems for me.

PSXe is the only decent one to work OK but I have the problem of not being able to map the Fast forward button. I tried to play with the mapping alot and just failed. I REALLY can't stand the default speed of the game, it's insufferable.

Any way to increase it without opening the menu every time?

the boring answer is retroarch. the real answer is

2) don't be a sissy crying over the text speed

>> No.4418112

It's a very very linear RPG with not much to do at all outside of the main quest. It's basically a slow slog forward through the narrative, nothing else to it. It's interesting, but I can't say I had fun playing it.

>> No.4418141

>>4413515
In fairness, you could compare it to some of it's JRPG peers on the PSX like FF 7-9 and Chrono Cross. Xenogears definitely has pretty generic music compared to them.

>> No.4418164

>>4418141
That was sort of where I was going with my original point before the guy I was talking to got defensive. Like you named the PS1 JRPG titans as far as soundtracks go, but as far as I'm concerned they're all cut from the same cloth (especially with Chrono Cross where they literally are, since Mitsuda did both soundtracks).

He does melodies better than any of his contemporaries, but his arrangements aren't as intricate as those on FFs 7+. This tends to be where the divide among opinions comes from.

Plus the context is key, I listen to a few XG songs outside of the game, but the ineffable emotional component is essential to the experience.

>> No.4418207

>>4418076
That does not solve the problem of the text speed unfortunately.

>>4418110
I tried Retroarch for Android and while it worked I couldn't find a way to fast forward using ReARMed Core. If I missed something i'd be glad if you could point me.

I don't use my PSP anymore for the same reason I won't pull my PSOne out of the closet, please stop suggesting I play on inferior hardware that can't force accelerate, that defeats the purpose of me emulating it, friend.

And I won't stop being a "sissy" about it because it's genuinely horrible and I don't intend to suffer through it even thou I enjoy the game.

ePSXe and FPSe both have the framelimit disabler in-menu but trying to map it fails every time with a DS4. I didn't try the JoyCons of the Switch yet but I don't think i'll fare better.

All I wanted was for my phone to be useful for the express purpose of why I bought it :(

Worst case scenario I still have a PC but I really want to make this shit work.
