Do you absolutely need a CRT television to play Battletoads? I've been thinking of picking it up but I've heard that on modern TVs the higher framerate creates lag, making some levels almost unplayable.

Not only do you need a cRT to beat battletoads, but you need to be running original hardware. Anything with a frame buffer like a modern display or emulation box is going to add a level of lag. I would argue that games like battletoads cannot be made these days due to the. Same could be said about rhythm games.

CRT is needed. Hardware too. Platformers and light gun games suffer when they're not using both. Also needed if you're playing as developers intended.

Damn. Original NES hardware isn't the problem, there's a used game store down the street that has a few NES's for sale, they probably also have an original Battletoads cart somewhere. But the CRT TV is a problem, my apartment is tiny and it's going to be difficult to find a place to store an extra TV.

Sund input and controller input problems come up. You can still play the games but you're not playing them as intended and still didn't complete the way they was meant to be.

Might as well listen to old music with the beats being wonky or colored old grey movies. It's a modification.

>>4411158
I'm curious too, I've seen playthroughs where people beat it emulated. Personally I'd opt for the original experience anyway because I feel like using save states is cheating, but it makes me wonder how anyone beat it emulated if the lag gets in the way.
>>4411164
What the hell is your problem? Is it somehow juvenile to post a Battletoads thread?

So emulation can get rid of lag, but the controls are altered?

Emulation always have sorts of lag, even Ai lag by seconds. I've seen megaman X snes vs real hardware, the emulation was slower.

Input lag is when the button message computes slowly to the game. Sound lag is when music is off and sometimes distorted. Ai lag when the Ai moves slower in response.

Savestates. Basically they're cheating. If space is a problem, they did make some really small BVMs. If that's too much money a small CRT could be found on craigslist pretty easy.

>> No.4411869

How the fuck can you not have space for a crt? It's a tv, not a truck.

I thought it was implied, but I meant without using save states.
I don't even see what save states would do to help you that lives and continues wouldn't on stages like clinger winger

I beat the US version of the NES game on an HDTV that has input lag, twice, and made it pretty far on an emulator with high ping because I was co-oping it with someone across the world.

It's not absolutely necessary, of course the game is still playable without one. It's just recommended so you'll get less input lag and better picture but that can go for literally every retro game. also bretty sure most people in this thread are trying to bait you.

>then he admits that he "beat" Castlevania II using a cheat code but he totally played the early game first so going straight to the boss years later in his life with a code isn't cheating and he really beat it (Halloween Castlevania II video)

Because input lag is overblown, people act like it's 3 seconds when in reality, OP would never be able to tell the difference
