What are some retro JRPGs that put a spin on the genre through its battle system or otherwise? It feels like the older I get, the less I can tolerate run-of-the-mill turn-based JRPGs. I used to love JRPGs because they took up so much time, but now just about every one outside of my favorites are either too slow or don't do anything different enough for me to enjoy playing. A couple to get the list going:

Super Mario RPG. Lots of humor, platforming elements and a timed battle system.

Valkyrie Profile. Unique setting and plot progression with a fun combo battle system.

Tales of Phantasia/Destiny/Eternia. It's clunky compared to the later games, but the Linear Motion Battle System stills holds up.

I'm thinking FFV for the job system and Seiken Densetsu 3 because, well, everything. Though they may not be innovative enough for what you're looking for.

Combos and sparking keep battles dynamic, and most of the main characters have a neat special ability, like Red's masquerade.

Phantasy Star was innovative at the time. Being a sci-fi fantasy themed RPG was really unique, when most JRPGs were more medieval fantasy themed.

The battle graphics were way ahead of its time. It has first person dungeon crawling. You traveled to multiple planets, each with their own huge overworld.

It's a bit hard to go back and play now, I think, but I think it was the most unique and innovative 8-bit JRPG.

Treasure of the Rudras: Magic crafting system through words.

Dragon Quest V: All the monster catching thing.

Romancing Saga 1: I think this is the first game to give you encounters through creature contact instead of randomly involving you in a combat. Also a very open world.

Final Fantasy II: A weird keyword conversation based system, plus being able to grow your character as you desire to.
