do any of you do this? i definitely plan on buying a super nintendo at some point but im picking up the cheaper <$20 games before buying the system to play them. i just picked up choplifter III because of its nostalgic value but lack the SNES to test it out...very well could be fucked and i dont even know it. is the risk worth it, even if i find a deal? im asking because while the choplifter has a space to look aesthetically pleasing on my shelf, im also looking at getting starfox and alien 3 because i found them at a discount online...

I don't do it but it makes sense to me. When I was younger I used to buy vinyl records before I had a turntable. Sometimes you don't want to miss a deal.
I guess it only makes sense if you plan on buying proper equipment later. Anyway that's just my opinion.

Sure, you can just run them on something else

that looks more expensive than just buying a SNES

That might be the most retarded thing I've ever seen. If you're going to play a game on your phone, just use ROMs.

I looked it up, and this thing is $85 USD. You could buy a real SNES for less money.

The only practical reason to collect old games is to play them on their original hardware, or maybe a clone console if you're not too picky about accuracy.

I do but have since picked up nearly all the systems I had games for. Only games I think I have no system for is PGM. It's not like that would be hard to change if I gave a shit.

Fuck off.

Usually no, as I have most common systems that have games that are easy to find.

Thanks for clarifying

I was going to emphatically answer no, but then I remembered I'm doing exactly this right now. I bought a bunch of Master System carts because they were the ones I've been keeping an eye out for and I'm gonna get a powerbase converter later.
Outside of a similar situation I don't know if I'd ever do that. Certainly wouldn't buy shit online, even if it was rare or whatever. Maybe I'd pick up one of those funny looking pirate famicom cartridges if I just saw it for cheap at a flea market or something.

>>4409585
surely that is technically making another illegal duplicate copy every time?

Not any more so than a CD player copying the CD's audio data into RAM to play it.
In the U.S., there's actually a specific copyright law exemption allowing temporary copies of this nature for software:117 (a) (1)
(Although that exemption is only for software -- so all those audio CD players might be piracy tools; it's never come up in court.)

I figured since you're just copying the ROM to your phone's emulator every time it'd be one of those laws that are essentially pointless and impossible to uphold.

Thank you, I did not know this. Very interesting.

There's also the Rio space-shifting court decision that said it was OK to rip CDs and put mp3s on mp3 players in the U.S.

Seems like it would apply to ripping non-copyprotected software like SNES cartridges, unless it only applies to audio recordings for some reason

Nah bro you don't have to worry. As long as you delete the ROM within 24 hours it's cool. This is a well known legal fact. It's posted on web pages and everything.

I've only done it a few times. I have a copy of Zool 2 for the Jaguar and a couple of Jag controllers I saw for a couple of bucks each at a Goodwill. I also have about 10 Atari 5200 games that were a buck each at a flea market. I've never come across either console in the wild, though, and I'm not planning on going out of my way to get them either.
