What controllers do you use for retro?
What are your favourites?

I like using the wii classic controller pro: thedpad is excellent for old games

I use a Sixaxis that I've been using for really long. Problem is the buttons are loose as fuck, and I got some rubber pads to replace the previous ones and it just really feels cheap as shit.

I got a PSOne Dual Shock too, one that I acquired refurbished and it feels tight and responsive, but the diagonals are a bitch to pull compared to the sixaxis. Gotta push those diagonals real hard with the d-pad and that kinda hurts. The rest though feels like I bought the gamepad brand new.

Now I'm trying to find another gamepad, one that perhaps isn't either cheap or missing my inputs like that, but I play a lot of PS1 shit so SNES gamepad clones, or the saturn one, aren't enough exactly. What would you guys recommend?

How are the 8bitdo controllers for retro gaming?

I heard so much praise about them but recently I read people here talk the d-pad sucks which is a dealbreaker since I want it for NES/SNES games.

Seconded. This together with a USB adapter is such a nice light weight solution. Since I don't have a stable home and travel/move alot, it works wonders. The D-Pad is awesome; travel distance is low, nice and clicky without being hard to push down. Same could be applied to all the buttons.
Dual Sticks and same layout as a DS controller. Just wonderful, and not that expensive to replace these days.
On the plus-side, the USB adapter I have has two slots. Just a solid controller.

An even less bulky alternative is the non-Pro controller, if you can stand the less comfy form factor.

The 8bitdo SFC30 I got is pretty good, d-pad included. I recall reading from /vr/ that it was only certain lot of controllers that were sold few years ago that had the shitty d-pad. There's also the buffalo pad, which is pretty darn nice(cost efficient, nice buttons and no dealing with bluetooth).

Story time:
>Buy the non-fancy first model Dual Action
>Throw away the receipt
>Pad breaks in under a month
>Bite the bullet and buy a new one (that was the only decent pad available at the time near me)
>Keep the receipt this time
>Pad still works ok after almost a decade

...though with "ok" I mean the analog sticks have loosened up over time and also developed some increased dead zone, but it's held up relatively well.
The D-pad's always been utter dog shit in that model, though. One of the worst D-pads I've every come across. Absolutely useless. The revised D-pad's infinitely better; I've been thinking of getting a new.

The dpad on the pre-DS2s were a bit painful to use. Wii Classic Pro is better in every way except for the non-circular analogs. Both could have better analog sticks though anyway.

The classic controller is a dream, and it works via bluetooth with the wiimote and GlovePIE (though Dolphin picks up the controllers natively and the drivers might be better these days).

You can do a lot with a Wiimote connected to your phone or computer via bluetooth. It's pretty cool. You can even use the pointer if you have IR lights/candles/your wii IR bar set up too.

Honestly? DS4. Excellent d-pad and ergonomic to boot, doesn't feel cheap either. Official bluetooth adapter gives it excellent wireless connectivity and responsiveness.

Controller of choice on a raspberry pi. Other controllers feel cheap to me (DS3) or has technical faults (ghost inputs on ibuffalo snes pad).

I'm thinking of buying an 8-bit do SF30, but apparently there's two different models now (which annoyingly, share the same model number).

Top is old model and bottom is new.

From what I could tell, only difference with bottom is that the design is more plain and it comes packed with a Bluetooth receiver for Wii/SNES Classic, also, doesn't come out until Dec 10th and is $10 cheaper.

Is that it? I couldn't find any more info on their website or any youtube shills doing sponsored reviews. I wanna think the newer should be better quality because it's newer, but the lower price is making me wary.

The ZL and ZR buttons are located differently, below L and R instead. The L and R buttons are also pure clicky and doesn't have have that analogue feel to them. That and that the cord goes out on the top instead of the bottom.

Other than that they are identical, cord length, button feel, everything.

Top is Bluetooth, bottom is not. You can use bottom on PCs, Pis and the like by USB cable, but the wireless functionality is restricted to the packed-in receiver for Wii/mini consoles.

Incidentally, top is already considered discontinued by the manufacturer, so better get one soon if you're interested on it.

Why did you done goof? Probably because you fell for the meme and didn't bother doing a few minutes to research to discover that it's actually a poor quality piece of shit that will start falling apart after a few hours of use.
