Who started DLC on consoles?, by DLC I dont mean full games, just small stuff like items and missing content

What are you, writing a book report on the history of video games?

Anyway it started with the Xbox 360. Oblivion horse armor. I knew it would change gaming forever and it did. I have never and will never spend a single cent on digital items.

Nintendo with the Pokemon games, splitting them into two versions with only a few different Pokemon between them was a cheap idea to sell more copies of the same game. The "you're supposed to play with friends" meme was a 10/10 cover by Nintendo.

In terms of actual downloadable content, the first I ever remember on a console was on the Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure had some weird texture pack you could download if you played on launch day that added balloons and Dreamcast banners to Station Square. PSO had quests and items you could only get by playing online.

You could get different language versions of games at the FDS kiosks. Then on Satellaview there were events that only happened at certain times within games. Check out BS-Zelda. Any way you slice it, Nintendo was the console trailblazer. Computer games had been doing it since the 70s though.

Sorry retard coming in. This is certainly for the Famicom Disc System so what is a "VCS"? I am not even trolling. I guess I am just uneducated as fuck. Sorry. Also since the Famicom had such disks could you easily copy those if you owned a PC or what were the disks like? Now that I think of it I am confused. I know the Famicom Disk System. A friend got one and he has colored cartridges which are like the NES cartridges but I saw old Japanese ads with that yellow disco mascot and they clearly had discs. So where do you put the discs? Or is the Famicom Disc System something different and all I know is just a red colored Japanse NES where you can blow into the second controller? I FEEL SO STUPID RIGHT NOW. Please help.

Also the disks are propriety disks similar to floppy disks. You can't use them in a standard floppy drive as far as I know. But I do know bootlegs were really common back in the day, so they can't be too hard to fake. The Disk System attaches to the bottom of the console, you can still use cartridges but the disks slide in the bottom of the unit.

>>4399362

Thank you very much. i assumed it was an attachment. I just got out of bed and I was feeling kinda stupid about this. i am already feeling way better. I also think the Famicom is damn sexy but the chords/wires are way too short. Guess you have to keep in mind how tiny Japanese living rooms are and that kids would sit right next to the telly. There is no comfortable gaming sitting a bit further away from the TV with those short cords. It still blows me away every time that you could blow into the controller. How did it technically work. I imagine this technology to be very very limited and not like what the Nintendo DS can do. I bet it can only tell if there is ANY kind of "voice input" or none. Still what a crazy thought and a typical Nintendo gimmick. It is just funny that they already put that into their first console ever. So what games used this besides Zelda where you chase off the bats and that Challenge by Beat Takeshi?

>I bet it can only tell if there is ANY kind of "voice input" or none
I believe you're correct, I think the idea was for the player to talk into the mic, but blowing into it forcefully triggered whatever mechanism inside it much more easily, so people took to doing that instead. Whatever that mechanism was, I'm not sure. I believe you could also use it in Kid Icarus to yell at shop owners and get better prices or something like that but other than that I don't know what games used it.

I think the first system to use DLC as in addons is the Dreamcast.
http://www.dreamcastlive.net/dlc.html
Satellaview and Sega Channel came before it, but they were downloading whole games instead of adding on to existing games.
That being said, however, Dreamcast DLC was mostly on-disk stuff since the only means of storage on the system was the VMUs.
There were plans to release a storage addon in the form of a Floppy Drive, but they cancelled it due to the fall in popularity of Floppy Drives.

You don't own the game, and it's naive to think they couldn't render your disc useless, not to mention that most modern games ship incomplete on the disc. You own a piece of plastic, the only right you have to the game is to play it until someone decides they don't want you to anymore. You can throw that license around, sell and trade it at will, but that's the only advantage. Otherwise you're simply hoarding.

In the strictest terms of "downloadable" content, the earliest example that comes to mind is Hudson's GB KISS technology. It was integrated directly into a select few Game Boy games, like Pocket Bomberman and Nectaris. It used an infrared connection that allowed user-created content to be shared between cartridges, and additionally functioned as a text message system. The content was stored via a battery backup just like SRAM data.

Metal Gear Solid 3. Blame Kojima. JK

The culture of RPGs, stats driven games, and their players are to blame. People who played subscriptions for MMORPG like WOW, proved people will pay for nothing. Weopons upgrades, treasure boxes, etc. are all RPG nigger people bullshit. My action and FPS games never had this kind of unlockable dlc shit, points driven stuff way back. You'd just play the game straight and it would be fun.

I don't even play games anymore. I don't have a current gen console. It just makes me depressed the devs put "unlockables", stats, random items into games that should be skill based. I fucking hate RPG games and RPG players for fucking every game genre over. They keep buying the same thing. EA even fucked up the last SSX game with this kind of jew unlockables mentality.
