Friendly reminder that there will NEVER be such a thing as 100% accurate emulation and the only thing you can hope for is merely acceptable emulation. Fifth gen emulation is atrocious and won’t be improving drastically past its current state, ever.

>> No.4394597

If you have pictures of decapped chips and someone who is capable of creating a transistor-level implementation based on that information, then you effectively have 100% accuracy. We’re just not there yet.

The biggest barriers to emulating more recent systems are copyrighted BIOSs and DMCA-protected DRM schemes.

Of course emulation won't be 100% accurate. It can't do light gun games. It can't emulate 3D games all that well(it has trouble with the Sega Saturn the most) and it definitely can't emulate the Sega Dreamcast 100% either. But poorfags will argue that emulation is perfect and that there's nothing wrong with pirating games they don't own.

>can't do light gun games

You mean HDTVs can't do lightgun games, and the reason why is very well understood.

If you had a fairly exotic setup with an emulator that generated a signal in real time and fed it to a CRT, light guns would probably work fine. Of course it's not practical as an FPGA emulator but it's not outside the realm of possibility.

Conventional emulators on the other hand manage that stuff fine if you have a mouse or a wiimote or something.

PSX emulation is great. Saturn emulation is acceptable, but requires good hardware. N64 is hit or miss, and the worst of the trio, but you're not missing much with that garbage console anyway.

i don't know what you're getting at, there are pros and cons to both and i will keep enjoying both original hardware and emulation.

The "Emulators aren't 100% accurate" thing is so funny because it implies that there is a correct way to render these games.

A super nintendo is going to look and sound different on pretty much every different CRT.

It's also funny to me that people care about audio accuracy when they're using the built in speakers on their 30 year old tv.

There's no such thing as 100% accurate, but for most titles worth a shit it is. Yeah maybe that one title that nobody would ever give a shit about has a small graphic glitch somewhere in one level. Yeah playing on an LCD increases input lag. Yeah if you have a gamepad that's not the same one as the one for the platform you're emulating it's not the exact same thing. But don't kid yourself. A PC with RetroArch, a GPU capable of using certain custom resolutions (which is most, considering there are patches for modern GPUs), a decent cable and a decent CRT TV renders a few consoles worthless. No shaders, no "shit looking unnatural" and definitely no discernible input lag. And best of all, you get to keep both your saves and your games anywhere you want and you don't need any extra cables or hardware around.

>> No.4395516

>>4395487
>Yeah playing on an LCD increases input lag.
this is blown so out of proportion
if the monitor is under 16ms or so you're not even getting 1f of lag. it only really makes a difference if you're playing on some huge laggy ass tv

I can see how PS1 emulating can be appealing especially since a lot of games that are emulated are actually better looking quality than the original game.

Its cool seeing people use an Xbox One controller for emulation. It looks really comfy once you get everything all set up. Sadly I will never be into emulation. I already have over 100+ PS1 games complete in box, man of which are rare and I play my PS1 every day on a PVM using RGB via SCART. Its interesting seeing others have the same love for the PS1 but via emulation. I use all original hardware, not judging at all, just noticing how both could be adequate. See for me, its just too late to get into emulation. I already own a huge library and have a near perfect original setup, so emulation just isn't for me... but it may have been nice had I started with it first \_(0.0)-/

This is my current setup:

-A CRT TV that supports RGB SCART
-A 15€ cable like pic related
-A free USB port for that cable
-An AMD 280x (so any modern AMD GPU that has a DVI-I output)
-Windows (though this is only for the guide I'm going to link, I don't know how this would work on linux/hackintosh)

So basically I followed steps similar to these:

http://geedorah.com/eiusdemmodi/forum/viewtopic.php?id=326

Only instead of fucking around with Custom Resolution Utility, I just use vmmaker to generate the resolutions I want and enable EDID emulation after that. Works on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10 and works with the latest AMD drivers to date so no bothering with weird setups or custom drivers or any of that bullshit, just that you have to use superwide resolutions (I use 3840x240 for instance) and of course software that can support that like RetroArch.

Correct! And did you know what else?

Games age.
Pre-16 bit era games are literally unplayable.
SNES was far superior to the Genesis, especially in regards to hardware.
Retro games are unplayable if not on a CRT, and even then the only true way to play is on a PVM.
Genesis has terrible music; everything sounds like wet farts.
SNES has terrible music; everything sounds like muffled farts.
N64 library was awful. 99% of games are shovelware (read: "party" games) and 100% of games look like dogshit because of the anti-aliasing. Talented in-house developers were the only thing that kept it alive, and even the so-called gems like OoT are overrated trash.
PSX library was awful. 99% of games are shovelware (read: "JRPGs") and 100% of games look like dogshit because of the jagged lines. Talented third party developers are the only thing that kept it alive, and even the so-called gems like FF7 are overrated trash.
Saturn library was awful. 99% of games are shovelware (read: "arcade quality" ports) and 100% of games look like dogshit because of the no transparancies. Talented Japanese developers are the only thing that kept it alive, and even the so-called gems like Panzer Dragoon are overrated trash.
Dreamcast is an utterly forgettable footnote to end the history of SEGA (Semen Ejaculating Gook Autists?). Good riddance!

Anything I missed?
