How is the Magical Drop series?

I am looking into getting one of the games to this series. How are they as puzzle games? What is the best game in the series? Should I get 2 or 3?

The US/World localization removed story mode from Magical Drop 3 and replaced the cute voices with some really awkward dubs. Emulate it in Japanese if possible.

Magical Drop 3 is the best one, and possibly the only worthwhile one aside from 2. The first game isn't very good, and all the sequels after 3 are awful.

If you can try to emulate the japanese arcade version of 3. The english version is awful.

There are only 2 sequels after 3. MDF is actually not bad, it's just more of a spiniff than a real sequel. MD5 is basically just an officially licensed (and poorly made) fan game though.

Magical Drop 2 on the SNES/SFC is ok if you've never played the series before, it was the first one I ever played. But after playing the arcade versions I could never go back. The first game is just too slow and clunky to be worth ever playing aside from seeing how the artstyle changed.

More characters, arcade mode has branching paths so it isn't the same every time, there's also the board game mode if you're into that, as well as just generally being smoother and more polished overall. 2 is just fine but 3 is an upgrade in all ways.

I think so. It's the only part of the game where not knowing japanese is a problem too but it's also pretty simple to figure out overall. I don't play it too often but it is a nice addition.

Play 3. It is the best game in the series and in my case, the best puzzle game I've ever played.

Lots of characters, fun board mode...what's not to like in this game ?

If you (and possibly your opponent) place a savestate with the game in jap BIOS mode in your savestates folder, you can play with the original voice acting on Fightcade.

F is the Puyo Puyo~n of Magical Drop.

>VERY slow animations and long chain windows, it's very possible to make 20+ chains (and they also have lower attack power) which make matches take a long time
>utterly unbalanced special powers that recharge based on chains made (read: you can spam them continuosly), going from completely OP (Sun) to useless (Tower) to literally absent (World, what the fuck were they thinking?)
>serious art style and story for a series previously with silly art and story
>some grating voice acting (Chariot, Justice)
>mixed bag of redesigns (bad: Sun, Wheel of Fate, so-so: Empress, Emperor, on par: Star, High Priestess, 100% improvement: Lovers, World)

F isn't BAD, and is still worthy playing for someone who liked 3, but it isn't as good and definitely doesn't have the same competitive potential.

Thats why MD3 rocks so hard. It has the perfect timing. ANd even apart from that magical drop 3 is a highly polished game. Idol exchanger is a blatant rip off. And only enjoyable in versus.
