Fuck no. I've been playing Dreamcast since 1999. I probably have more original copies of Dreamcast games than the poorfags who burn them on discs who was too poor to buy a Dreamcast & the games when they were brand new.

>people still confused about CD quality

Look, unless you are using 1 cent Chinese CD's that have the layers peeling off of the fucking disk, odds are the disk will work just fine. It might degrade faster, be a bit more sensitive to burning speeds, but it will probably work. It's the quality of the rip that really matters. Most people who have burn issues are using craptastic rips that "just werks" in emulators only. Use proper rips and you shouldn't have many problems.

I'm using literal no-name brand CD-Rs I got a stack of 100 for dirt cheap. They are so low quality the manufacturer is too ashamed to put their name on them. So far I've had two games that didn't come out right and both of those were because the rip was crap. Both PSX and DC accept these crappy cheap discs just fine.

i actually bought pic related last week.

solders to the board and then sticks out the back of the dreamcast. you can then hook an ide cable + hard drive up or an ide to sd card reader. Games wont lag like they do with the sd to serial port adapters.

Plus nowhere near as expensive as the usbgdrom or gdemu. itll be a nice present for my launch day dreamcast.

There are severe limitations with the HDD interface devices though. The consensus has generally been that WinCE games will never work with them. Completely pulling this number out my ass, but that's a good 15% of the library that will never work. It probably has better compatibility than the SD card adapter, but worse than GDEMU and USB-GDROM and regular CD-Rs.

Also IDE HDDs seem to have gone the way of the dinosaur. I used to be buried in them but I haven't found one that wasn't on its last legs or worse for a while.

I'd say if you want cheapest go for CD-Rs, if you want convenience go for one of the ODEs. At $50 for a bare PCB this HDD mod kind of fits in the middle but with worse compatibility and mandatory case modding.

Just a warning to anyone buying a Toro/Akura from behar bros.

While the quality of the devices themselves are pretty good, their cabling leaves a lot to be desired. I've had two of the custom cable that runs from the back of the dreamcast to the Toro box break on me due to it being too short and not structurally sound. The way the box hangs out from the back creates a lot of strain on the wires and they can break from the connector. I emailed them about this the first time it happened to me and they were nice enough to send me a replacement cable. But then it happened to me again. It's not like I was constantly moving my dreamcast around and I always disconnected the box before I moved things.

I haven't bothered emailing them because I doubt they will give me another cable. The best that I can do is try and repair the cable myself but without the pinout it's a bit of trial and error.

Apart from that, it's an amazing product that allows me to get 480P VGA over Scart into my PVM and works extremely well with the framemeister

Bang: Gunship Elite loads up but wont start for me past the VMU check. Resident Evil 2 will straight up not start, just brings you to the DC menu but then shit like Kiss: Psycho Circus, Atari Anniversary and Worms Armageddon works fine haha. Very odd.

Why do WinCE games give things like the USB GD-ROM, SD cards, etc so much trouble. Is it just because of the way they were made/ported?

OP is shit. Next time include some fucking information, and not youtube eceleb vids. Like so:

Dreamcast General
The last home console released before the cutoff, it's got a funky controller but it's cheap and VA0 and VA1 systems accept CD-R copies without a modchip.

BURNING GAMES:
You need .CDI rips. The older and crappier rips are not self booting, so when the DC starts up you will need to choose "Game" to start playing. The newer and proper rips will automatically boot. The majority of games will fit on standard CD-R's, a few require specially large 99MIN/900MB disks. Quality of rip is more important than quality of the disc.

INTERNET:
DC has native networking capabilities. Every DC comes with a 56k modem, and you can find Ethernet adapters but they are pricey. You can run the 56k modem through a RaspPi with DreamPi installed and use the RaspPi as an adapter to connect your DC to your router. Thanks to the community, online functionality has been restored in a number of games, and they are working to get the rest working as well. List of working games:
http://www.dreamcastlive.net/games.html

ACCESSORIES:
The DC has a light gun, a fishing controller, a keyboard, and a mouse available. They go from $15 to $40 depending on the accessory. There are unofficial light guns, but they are inferior crap. The fishing controller is a must have if you plan on playing the fishing games, and can be used in Soul Calibur oddly enough. The mouse and keyboard are supported by Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 Arena, Phantasy Star Online, Soldier of Fortune, and the Half-Life prototype.

Get this shit right here. You can use this to do all kinds of wacky shit with the VMU's(memory cards). Change the display's settings, load an improved cheat file for CodeBreaker, play the VMU minigames on your TV, load save games and minigames to your VMU, it does it all.

So i was looking through my garage and found a spindle of CD-Rs, menorex brand. The discs look clean but, at the very least, they are about 10 years old. Are these safe to use with my dreamcast?

I burned MvC1 and it worked. Nice. Though i was mainly wondering if maybe newer CD-Rs are of better quality and using these very old ones will put more stress on the cd drive

I did but it still won't recognize cd-rs.
I guess I'll have to go and check the drive itself because I have no clue why it isn't working.

I paid $30 for Shenmue CIB and great condition. Got a console bundled w/ Chu Chu Rocket, Soulcaliber, Space Channel, and JSR. Crazy Taxi and House of the Dead 2 are next on the list. Then onto expensive shit like MvC2 and Shenmue 2.

If anything newer CD-Rs are shit. As the market shrinks companies put less and less effort into producing them.

Also, RIP Taiyo Yuden

How slow is the SD reader for the Dreamcast?

>> No.4397982

>>4395742
A couple hundred kilobytes per second give or take a megabyte. Too slow really for most 3D games, but fine for some, like Mars Matrix. Just look up serial port speeds to get a better idea.

>> No.4398283

Does anyone have any idea how to do this?

Why do you want to bother? It's 9 years old and he admits it's crap.

>"The Dreamcast port of Yabause is quite slow. I have done very little in the way of optimizing any of the core of Yabause toward the Dreamcast (there is quite a bit that could be done when time allows). Do not expect the Dreamcast port of Yabause to run your favorite Sega Saturn games at any sort of playable speed for now (or the near future). As Yabause
matures, and I have more time to work on it, hopefully speed will improve. For now, think of it as a fancy tech demo. "

Can any of you identify this old DC game I played at a demo kiosk in the US?

What I remember: It was some sort of 3rd person game where you control a vehicle (spaceship?). The game had split-screen multiplayer (split across the screen, not down). The particular memory I have is controlling a vehicle that looked like the mothership from Independence Day (UFO with a brick coming out of it) and gliding across the surface of a planetoid with space and stars above me.

Any guesses?

Looking up videos, the colors definitely seem to match! I would say that's the best option from the games I've looked up.

Has there been any other documented case of a NAOMI game being homebrew-ported? Pretty much every other game on the platform I can think of got an official release. This would be cool as fuck, especially as I like the Arcade soundtrack a little better.

I feel like if it did come out for the dreamcast at the time, sega would have made a cool banana controller for it considering all the cool controllers the dreamcast has, like the maracas. It's fun to think about what could have been.
