The Shigeru Miyamoto Donkey Kong Country quote is something that has been passed around for ages, but I have never actually seen a source for it. I also recall Miyamoto himself saying in 2010 that he never said that because he worked closely with the production of DKC and wouldn't have talked trash on a colleague.

So where the hell does this quote even come from?

And this theory was backed up with the point that the original Yoshi Island graphics were rejected by the Nintendo board at the time, because they told to Miyamoto that his game didnt look anything near as good as the Donkey Kong Country games. The original source of the rumor is Steven Kent's video game history book, where he cites his own interview from some magazine he used to work for. The interview seems unlikely because he describes it as haven taken place with Kent, one of the Stamper brothers (can't remember which one) and Miyamoto all in the same room. Aside from the fact that two men who live and work on opposite sides of the globe are probably very rarely able to be interviewed together in person, I'm not sure why Miyamoto would blame "Americans" for Donkey Kong Country when Rare is a British developer and he would know this.

Peer Schneider of IGN/Gaijin 4koma fame is probably the one most responsible for spreading it around though. The guy had a major hateboner for DKC for whatever reason.

And you just need to look at the game to see some evidence for that, with Argonaut previously working on Nintendo on another early 3D game (StarFox), Croc himself looking WAY too much like a Yoshi model changed just enough to avoid lawsuits, and even subtler stuff like most bosses being regular creatures enlarged with magic just like in YI, collectible-driven gameplay like YI, and game looking simplistic compared to SM64 despite being released later.

Actually a friend of mine mentioned it just after the release of Yoshi's Island in 1995. He didn't stated the font but apparently Miyamoto was asked what he tought about DKC and the response was an evasive "it has good graphics". Probably a quick comment like that was the origin of the myth. I am pretty sure that there is no interview in which he said that, so it must be a passing mention in some old magazine.
