This motherfucker right here. As a kid I 100%'d the game with every character twice. Recently 100%'d it again and beat N. Oxide on every time trial. Just can't stay away from it for very long.

Aliens versus Predator
the 1999 PC version, not the console sidescrooler from mid 90s

and also non-retro Shadowgrounds, an isometric shooter that reminds me of "crusader no regret", and from which thge modern "alien breed" 2,3 and trilogy games rip off from;
its got only rolls and side jumps, but isnt "tank controls" like crusader, super fun dodging red wrenchers and one-offing them with the stronger shotgun when their bellies are exposed in mid-jump towards me... camera fixed on character is best option for crowd fighting

Hey man thta game aint retro! But it's good as hell
Personally I love SMB, SMB2 (J) and VS SMB to death. I play them every day. I was disappointed that Super Mario Maker didn't retain each game's original physics tho...

I played whichever two shadow grounds gamed were on steam. There was a little touch in there I really appreciated; one character was counting all their kills, to try and keep sane, and they were the only character in game to have a kill counter on the hud.

nah you played "shadowgrounds survivor", theres 3 separate campaigns, the flamethrower guy has the counter i think, this sequel is kinda weird/boring, the fist man could do rolls but onyl had a couple weapons. fat flame guy was slow, and stages were short and theres was no continuous improvement.

the first game is quite nice with its progression of levels and enemy types ramping up the difficulty as you find new weapons like in FPS games, and collect "resources" dropped by enemies to upgrade the weapons, the only drawback is that its like diablo in that you must first beat it on normal to then play it on hell.

sticking to the two shot shotgun or the stun pistol on some areas and using rolls and movable boxes to navigatge thru waves of melee and projectile enemies is rad as shit, enemies are kinda "activated" as you approach them, so in some big areas if you run around you end up with more than you can handle, that's when the fun starts in the normal mode. on the second play its more challenging all around.

It was practically a religious experience at Christmas of '94, and if anything it's only gotten better with age.

>Xenogears: 1998, PS
aka Episode V; Xenogears as we know it but with a complete second disc.

>Xenogears 2: 2000, PS
aka Episode II. A sequel was greenlighted to establish the series as an action RPG akin to their conventional JRPG behemoth Final Fantasy series. Game enjoyed better production values and did well enough to continue the series on the next platform.

>Xenogears Episode I: 2003, PS2
Rebranding the series brought new fans to the series without sacrificing its old fanbase. Huge commercial success, released between FF10 (2001) and FF12 (2006) to a starving JRPG fandom that was lukewarm about FF11.

>Xenogears Episode V: 2005, PSP
Vastly overhauled port of the first Xenogears game. Seemingly random naming pattern earns mockery, but quality of the port wins critics and PS2 era fans over.

>Xenogears Episode II: 2005, PSP
Another rebranded and polished port, released half a year later. Fandom reaches new heights between old fans and new fans, building hype for...

>Xenogears Episode IV: 2006, PS2
Generally considered the peak of the series and one half of the 2016 JRPG juggernaut, next to FF12. XGIV is considered the best iteration of the XG formula. To this date, discussions about them turn into shouting matches between the two camps.

>Xenogears Episode III: 2009, PS3
Producing two high-quality games in parallel almost brought Square Enix to its knees, delaying the development release of FF13 and XGIII for several years, with gaming as a whole moving away from the JRPG genre. XGIII, while selling well, fails to repeat the success of XGIV in a saturated market. Critics note that the formula starts to feel stale.

>Xenogears Episode I: 2011, PSV
Port of the first PS2 game. One of the best-selling launch titles on a weak platform.

>Xenogears Episode IV: 2012, PSV
Port of the second PS2 game. Received well, but didn't find new fans.

>Xenogears Episode VI: 2013, PS3
The final episode. Creatively drained, Takahashi bows out.
