4377003 No.4377003 [Reply] [Original]

How hard exactly are Sonic 1 & 2 on the Genesis? I am currently catching up on platformers I never finished and recently play SMB3, which I think was just right in terms of difficulty. But I played the All-Stars version of it which has a save feature. As far as I know Sonic 1 and 2 don't have save features and the second game is an hour long. How difficult are they to finish? I don't think I could beat SMB1 without getting at least 2 or 3 game overs in the All-Stars version WITH the save feature.

They are piss easy, since they were supposed to be beatable by 4 year olds.

Sonic 2's final boss is an exception though. It's actually a gauntlet, you have to defeat 2 bosses in a row, no rings, so it's an insta-death match, and the second boss requires some precision jumps to kill. You'll probably lose two lives on it, the horror.

Seriously, what's wrong with the modern games. My MOM could beat SMB1 on the original console back in the early 90's. I used to watch her play and aside from biting the dust in a few Bowser castles she got through the game just fine.

They're only "hard" if you don't know how to play them, but you should be able to figure out basic things like rolling pretty quickly.

Sonic 1 is easy.
Sonic 2 has a dumb life-grinder of a level at the end, but you can probably still get through it without a game over if you take your time to find extra lives.

>Sonic 2's final boss is an exception
No joke first time I got there I spent every life and continue I'd accrued over the whole game, vast majority of them on the first phase.
On the second playthrough I realized how trivial Metal Sonic really is and spent probably half a minute or less before getting straight to the second phase. I felt like I'd been scrambling through a bathroom window when there's a revolving door right next to it.

1 is pretty easy from start to end.
2 is a joke until about 2/3 in where it suddenly has a huge difficulty spike not too hard.

You can also get like 3-4 hits in as he's slowly descending. The fight is still pretty hard on your very first try, since you've no idea what to expect, and if you just try jumping on him normally you'll get hurt by spikes. Not to mention that have you get into the rhythm of his attacks, sometimes he's just dashing, sometimes he will leap over you, sometimes roll over you, and he can also blast off his spikes in a circle pattern. I remember noting all these things as a kid, since Metal Sonic's patter is not random at all and is exactly the same every time you fight him.

>Sonic 2
At first I was unsure of what exactly I was feeling while going through loop-the-loops, half-pipes, vaccuum tubes, spring boards, getting hit, collecting a ring, getting hit, collecting a ring, bouncing on Eggman for eight seconds. Of course I now recognize it to have been the onset of nihilism. Donkey Kong Country might've been the game that truly brought the platformer genre into the dark ages of inanity, but it wasn't the outbreak monkey.

Because simply put, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is a cycle of faulty design endlessly revving spin-dashes into itself. And it all stems from its alleged highest quality: speed. Given the fast rate of scrolling, any type of serious opposition from enemies would seem unfair, for starters. It would be too difficult to react to more than the odd projectile or lunge without committing entire stage layouts to memory. Even nerfed enemies could prove challenging at top speed without a "proper" health mechanic, and we don't want to squander the selling point by making it unknown to beginning players, as they tip-toe around fearing punishment for wielding this fire you bestowed on them. So now we have rings, and an infinite potential for recovery from nearly any mistake. But an action game can't be completely without obstruction or penalty, can it? Not to worry, they've added in some spikes and a few pitfalls. F-U-N. Add a corkscrew loop-the-loop and congratulations, you've just designed a Sonic the Hedgehog stage. Now, maybe somewhere along the line, a game without these concessions would've been possible. But would it then have been the game that got the kids clamoring come Christmas time?

>> No.4377314

1 is a snooze-fest, because they hadn't fully embraced going fast yet and so there's tons of shit that just unnecessarily slows you down, even if you know it's there. 2 allows for a lot more creative play.

>MUH SPIKES
>MUH PITFALLS

Why do people who only play the Advance games feel like they have the authority to talk about the originals? They always out themselves when they bring up spikes and pitfalls. The game barely has any of these in your path outside of Starlight's pits, Wing Fortress, and the one Mystic Cave Zone pit.

They're not hard at all once you get the hang of how the game works.

Rolling downhill gets you more speed than running, and it's generally more safe. Don't bother with the spindash, just press down when running to roll, that's the best way to dispatch enemies.

Or CD. But CD is boring according to some and easy with no pits.

Stages like Aquatic Ruin you should spindash on small slopes to reach higher places, like a literally moon jump by pressing the dpad diagonally with the right timing.

They are amazingly easily. Throughout most of the game all you need to do is keep hold of 1 ring and you will not die. You don't even have to figure out boss patterns properly if you keep getting hit and grabbing a ring back.

> I don't think I could beat SMB1 without getting at least 2 or 3 game overs
Since you are amazingly bad at video games you may have difficulty with the final bosses as the safety net of rings is unavailable. But it's really only one small challenge, surely you can adapt to the patterns after losing a few of the many lives you will have accumulated by that point.

Silver Sonic is still piss easy as you can get 6 hits on him just by spindashing in his position.
Death Egg Robot isn't too bad, but it is a bit on the tedious side for my tastes.
Metropolis Zone isn't bad via instadeath, but it's fuckin annoying.

>> No.4378953

Both are relatively easy. Sonic 2's final boss is probably the most difficult part of both games.

Sonic 2's bonus stages are harder than Sonic 1's but that's all optional.

>> No.4378962

Everyone here is going to tell you the game is piss easy but you'll be back tomorrow telling us that the game is shit because you can't stop running into things like a retard.

just because you can't die doesn't mean that sonic isn't too hard for 90% of people. most gamers that play these games just run into enemies without rolling and instead of trying to get better just pick up their one ring and do the same dumb shit again

Sonic 1 isn't terrible but the game will fuck you about with insta-kill squish deaths that you don't know are there till first time through, so it has the same coin/ring collecting to farm lives arcade aspect as Super Mario
