Yeah. Gameplay wise it's one of the best.
FF9 is the worst Final Fantasy because it takes so long to start actually being good and even still I'd give it a 6/10 like that other anon. FF13 is similarly a 6 but it starts opening up faster than FF9.

Most of the criticisms I've heard on 13 actually reveal that people who use them haven't played the game. It's like that "Gimmick is an easy peasy little baby's game" criticism.

Never understood this game's appeal. I did finish it and all sidequests but Excalibur II. Still, I had no desire to attempt a second playthrough. The characters are insufferable, the story is a fanfic, battle scenes run slower than molasses, and there's no way to customize character skills. The last part was especially a letdown considering that other FF games for the PS1 had really flexible skill systems.

>>4372958
>"HD" version
Jesus, this looks like garbage. It's like they upscaled the backgrounds in MS Paint. I'd rather play the original game with borders around it.

>> No.4373541

all mainline ff's have poor gameplay, with 12 being the best but only because it tried to be a single player mmo (which is infinitely better than random battle bullshit)

that said, 9 is my favorite for every other reason

An item that players consider essential if you plan on doing later content takes over a year of doing the same raid three times a week? That really doesn't sound sucky to you? Okay.

What the hell are you talking about, FF9 has the quickest start out of all of them.

Yeah guides just ruin these games. Final Fantasy is always super easy anyways, so all you get from going that far out of your way to 100% everything is that the game becomes even more of a joke.

I learned my lesson after throwing megalixers at Sephiroth for the whole last battle just to keep him alive long enough so I could see Supernova.

he honestly spams supernova, even if you opened the fight with omni slash / highwind / doom of the living, you still wouldn't kill him before he would supernova you, stop making shit up. Even moreso if you killed the weapons first and he got his stats increased.

That shit isn't there to 100%, it's there for people to find a niche and chase it. People have completely lost the concept that a game might be designed to be played in different ways that don't involve just picking dialog wheels.

It's a much stronger design concept to have 3-4 side quests that all have their own twist. And then expect some players to chase them while others won't. It doesn't become a problem until you go full autism and have to chase every single one

It actually is. I played 6 for the first time after 13 and it confused the fuck put of me. Hoe could the same people criticise the opening hours of 13 for being linear and basically one big corridor, and at the same time praise 6 as the best ff evahr, when the opening hours are pretty much the same?

It's even worse because instead of focusing on a specific team in a specific place it jumps all over. In one moment you're controlling one character and suddenly you seitch to another half a world away. Fucking game only becomes slightly interesting when you finally unlock the espers.

Uncompressed data assets, especially visual and audio, are fucking massive. They often wind up compressed down to anywhere between 10% and 20% of the original size. That and reliable storage was expensive at the time.

I would not be surprised if the source assets for FF9 took up 15-20 gigabytes, which would fill entire hard drives at a time back in 2000.

Nah, that was actually my second playthough. On my first I was fighting him normally. I had heard about the move and wanted to see it but remembered my friend saying he was easier than Kefka. So I thought I should let up a minute but then he died on the next hit.

Some time after I did a second playthrough of the game and seeing Supernova was one if the goals. But I had been doing gil farming in the last dungeon and had Cloud set up with nothing but Cover and a bunch of Counter and Counter Skill materia. So any attack on the party he would block and then counter attack a ridiculous number of times. ( I think I worked out it was more damage that knights if the round)

Anyways, I went into the final fight one day but then realized I forgot to re-equip Cloud. So that's why everyone just threw a megalixer at him any chance they got. It worked though and ge died right after.

And that was the last time I ever played FFVII.

6's pass is usually because of the World of Ruin, which is actually a bit unfair because FF in general likes to be on some sort of laser focus. 5 and Chrono Trigger more or less work the same way in endgame, you basically can do anything you want in any order and the boss is there for however early or late you want to end the game.

Difference is that 5 opens up a bit more before second world when you get the airship, but it's for a limited time and you don't get it back until the end gathering time.

For most things the effort of keeping assets around was not always considered worthwhile. Consider the amount of shit that is produced by company and how much could be needed to be preserved (every single iterative build of the game, every iterative model, etc.) and you have a sum of data and a file count that is way, way higher than the final product represents. Not to mention you have to have thorough documentation indicating what everything is, because no, not every employee in the whole company, and especially not new employees, is going to know every damn thing about every game. From a business perspective, games are a project, and because they have such large and numerous assets of questionable value after the game's release, there has not been much of a culture for prservation.

It's getting done more now because time has shown that there can be value in keeping those things, but at some point you have to evaluate from a business perspective if it's worth using the money to maintain all of those assets. Not every piece of code or 3D model is worth preserving from a business outlook.
