Games based around licensed food are usually at least decent. For example:
>Cool Spot
>Yo! Noid
>Chex Quest

>> No.4371227

>>4371219
Out of those, I only played Cool Spot back in the day. It was definitely cool, but as a game it was average at best.
M.C. Kids on the other hand, isn't cool by any means, but damn it's good, the controls are tight and the level design is ingenious.

I know at least with MC Kids the Devs at Virgin set out to *gasp* actually make a good game set around fun gameplay, so much so they actively defied McDonalds themselves who wanted it to be a big shameless McDonalds advertisement. McD's ended up pulling their advertising money as a result, hurting sales.

Sega-Sammy is a doppelganger of the once glorious Sega-CSK. As far as I'm concerned, the real Sega stopped existing in the mid '00s when Sammy bought them and turned them into a yakuza front-end. Ignoring all their old IPs except Sanic, barely making any new IPs, giving all their old great talent the shaft... nu-Sega is a disgrace.

I don't remember much autoscrolling, but whatever. A shame you're skipping on a good game for a few nitpicks. Slowdown doesn't make the game unplayable. Even arcade games had slowdown back in the day, nobody complained about it then, unless it freezed the screen or something.

>I don't remember much autoscrolling

I love Astro Boy but you're nuts if you don't remember all the auto scrolling segments. The game was jam packed with it. Level design was also bland and the enemy variety was severely lacking unless you count recolors and upscales as new enemy types.

Fun as hell game though. Dragonball Adventure and Omega Factor are the best anime licensed vidya in the GBA.

You mean the shmup stages? When I think "autoscroller" I think stuff like the airships on Mario 3, although there was an elevator stage if you want to count it as auto-scroll.
I wouldn't expect much in level design because it's a beat 'em up game, like Alien Soldier (in fact it reminds me of AS a lot), it's true that a lot of enemies are recolors and resizes though, but somehow the game never felt repetitive to me, since it had so many different bosses and mid-bosses.
I haven't played the DB game, but OF is on my top GBA games period.
You can tell the game was made with love.

This is my main beef with Treasure games. They focus too much on the bosses while ignoring the level design. Very few of their games have actually good level design.

Normally I don't mind that because their games tend to practically be boss rushes. Astro Boy has a fuckton of "levels" though, and none of them are fun to play.

Anyway, "level design" in a game like Astro Boy is the same kind of "level design" you can find on Alien Soldier. The main point is fighting enemies, not jumping into platforms. Although there is some mild exploration in levels to find secrets and stuff.
