Thoughts on the Game Gear?

>> No.4369969

I wish it had taken off, it was like the Master System getting a second shot at life. Sadly, there is no universe in which an 8-hour battery life at 6 batteries a pop is acceptable.

>8-hour battery life at 6 batteries

More like 1 hour. I never beat Sonic 2 for GG due to the batteries dying before I could even get to the final stage of the game.

>> No.4369987

>>4369969
I'd say 6 batteries period is unacceptable. Although it would have been great to see an updated Game Gear that was smaller and only needed 2 batteries instead like the GBC. Of course the plug in adapter was always the best way to enjoy the Game Gear anyways since it took too many batteries.

>> No.4369994

>>4369985
You should have got the adapter anon.

Game Boy Pocket is the way to go. 10+ hours of battery life with just two AAAs. Of course, there's no backlight. It's not an issue if you're playing during the day, or you invest in one of those cheap clip-on booklights.

>> No.4370009

>>4369974

Perhaps, but the fact it's rechargeable makes this apples-to-oranges. I know my DS Lite got better battery performance than that, though.

>>4369987

Yeah, 6 batteries sucks for sure. But then to get so little in return...

Gameboy Pocket was how I always thought the Gameboy should have been. The original screen on the Gameboy was *so* damn heinous.

In real live.
GB with normal 4 AA battery can only play 4 hour and It only 2 hour left if you maximum sound volume.
GG is same you can play 2 hour with 6 AA battery and only 1 hour with maximum sound volume.

>> No.4371138

>>4370026
Gameboy was 80s tech. Decent screens that small for that price weren't a thing.

>> No.4371206

Everyone likes to say how the gamegear failed because it drained batteries like crazy, as if many were adults at the time that the GG was available,

the thing is the only people who would know this are the ones who owned it and anyone who bought it wouldn't know any better. The fact that it ran 6 double a batteries was probably a better reason as that was something people could realize before buying.

But most likely I think the GG failed because it was too expensive while the GB was cheaper. This whole battery myth was spouted by some youtuber and bad gaming journalists over ten years ago and now everyone says its the reason.

As far as I know, the Game Gear never failed. It was a mildly successful system.

Build-in light only help you see white pixel but black pixel still hard to see.
LCD still has bad response time.
Battery-life too poor.
I think GG only make to play by AC-adapter.

It did take off. I knew multiple people that had one. At least 5 off the top of my head. Little asshole nieghbor kid never let me play Sonic 2. Compare that to an actual failure like the Vita, of which I know 1.

Game gear sold about 10 mil (source is Wikipedia)

PS Vita sold about 12 mil circa 2015 (source is http://n4g.com/news/1767628/playstation-vita-sales-top-12-million-worldwide))

obviously both are potentially dubious sources, but I feel like the lack of perceived presence is due to other factors, like how you likely don't go out with friends as much (or at least don't play handhelds or have them laying about) and how PS Vita was more succesful in Japan (obviously.)

I know only myself personally to own one but I would say it's definitely not a flop, and neither is the Game Gear for that matter. Until last year the GG outsold the XB1 iirc (no source so feel free to ignore this point.)

even worse if your parents bought you shitty mercury batteries, you got 20 mins max out of those fucks and then "what they are flat already son? im not buying you any more!"

so you had to be tied to a megadrive power lead and it was dodgy so if you moved it would cut out and you would have to restart sonic from the start when you was half way through bridge zone :(

I actually never got my hands on one, but there's this place I go called Pastime Legends and they sell all of these old videogames. Truth be told, the owner of the store went to my high school and he had the same English teacher as I do.

There is for Master System carts, but I don't think there was ever one for Gamegear, even a third party one. Only thing similar to what I'd want is I've seen youtube chumps modding a Gamegear to have an output into a TV. I don't think I care enough to go that far.
If you know something that proves me wrong then please do correct me. I'd be glad to be wrong.

I wanna play Tails Adventure[\spoiler] on a big old tube teevee dangit

Nothing for carts but you can romhack the games into master system compatible format then play them on Genesis via an everdrive.

>> No.4372365

Had one back in the day, my brother and I both got them, with various Sonic games, Lion King, Ren and Stimpy, good times. The Sonic game if you moved the cartridge mid game very carefully it would enter this weird mode where it would play various music tracks from the game and you could select them with the left or right arrow keys, I only managed to do it once.

Both of them have fucked screens, appears to be a common issue.

I realize that it really probably isn't at all, but I'm so used to just sticking "official" pieces of plastic together and expecting them to work, that that just sounds all kinda year 2000 space age crazy and complicated

maybe I'll look into it someday. thanks for bringing that up
