What are some retro games with a gothic atmosphere?

It's a shame there are so many great retro Japanese games but because of the language barrier a lot people don't even bother to give it a fair try let alone play it at all. It's actually not that difficult to read and with a basic understanding of Japanese you could play through most of the game. I'd love to see more people get into them. Pic related is another awesome game that I wish more people would know about its probably one of the more creative and interesting games out there for the PSX

It's not a visual novel at all there is plenty of game play in 夕闇通り探検隊. Obviously you haven't played it so please refrain about speaking about things that you have no experience with.

With the old sound novel games there is a lot to enjoy: great story, art and music all brought together in a choose your own adventure style gameplay. If you don't enjoy those types of games it's as simple as not playing it instead of dismissing everything automatically because it's "doesn't have gameplay"
