For me, /vr/ is the obvious first choice. But where else? Personally, I'm not a big fan of watching autists sperg on youtube about their favorite games. I'd rather read an opinion. Retrogradepro.com looked kind of promising, but I haven't seen anything since a meh Xenogears retrospective went up. I like reading Kotaku, for instance, when they reflect on older titles. Any suggestions?

Sadly only this place, and i hate it because half of my threads are deleted by mods.

Then why are you on /vr/?

Because you keep trying to start PS2 and GBA threads.

Because at least I don't have to listen to your stuttering, gay voices and see your awkward downs syndrome faces.
Youtube and "e-celebrities" are genuinely the worst thing about living in the present.

That wasn't my point. /vr/ is essentially just a slower iteration of /v/. There's far more shitposting than there is useful - or at least mildly constructive - discussion.

Yeah, like this thread. I don't really mind though. "Old video games" are not actually such a deep and multifaceted topic that there's much "useful" or "constructive" discussion to be had in the first place.

As opposed to new video games? Why would that be, given that since the 80's there have been so many game releases?

Of course, it does't help if you artificially limit the discussion to <2000

Old or new, doesn't matter. Beyond "reviewing" them and plainly stating what you liked and didn't like, what else is there to talk about? You can try to compare and contrast different things, but that immediately devolves into console wars, shitposting, and infighting if there is even the slightest disagreement. In the end it's all just hot takes and complaining. It's not a super cerebral, intellectual hobby you know.

I remember games I forgot about by re-reading my back issues of EGM and although that adds a "retro feel" you can download scans of lots of old game magazines.

On the opposite ends I discover games I never even knew about through digging either through Japanese exclusives (like wow MSX is great) or PC games since PC gaming was always cost prohibitive to me back in the day.

Then there's regular new translations being released like Far East of Eden Zero. That's legitimately FRESH™

I like to look at World of Longplay's youtube channel. It features complete playthrough of games with no audio commentary, so you can take a look at a few minutes of footage and see if you'd like it or not. They feature a lot of old consoles and computer systems on that channel.

>discussion to be had
well ok, but there's more tittles avaiable than one person could try in a non ruched way.

ideally i would use /vr as to discover fun stuff to play, but its hard when even after spending a few minutes twice a week to hide all the spam and cyclic threads the few left are a mix of fanboyism, threads on the usual games, e-celeb / dev-celebs, and cryptic threads without filename or explicit description text, just a unsearchable cropped picture of some less-than-popular game and some secretive discussion about it.

the the spam/shitpost, takes such a vast chunk that every now and then when i try starting a legitimate thread with introduction to present something new to me or ask about possible related content, it dies in 1-3 days if the people who would get interested in it dont have a chance to see it.

the internet forums have really come to a paradox

if you have registration and identities the human ego kills discussion, if you have no identities the bored preteens who are left alone with a computer spam the shit out of you... i would like to be wrong, but i believe the only thing that hasn't been tried is a form of anonymous forum with open admin-log like 8shan, and a wiki like distributed moderation, with censorship of FORM (as in shitpost) following immutable guidelines (to protect agains takeover from newcomers that happens to online communities when getting popular past a certain point)

>"reviewing" them and plainly stating what you liked and didn't like, what else is there to talk about?
i always thought the point was to describe briefly all the mechanics in the game and only finally insert your opinions tying with reasons as semi-objectve as possible,

say i state that this and that mechanic are used too much and it feel more like a chore than challenge, if the reader likes skinnerbox games he might conclude this tittle is worth checking, regardless of the review conclusion or any scoring system used.
