What makes a PC game "retro"?

Diablo II, Shadows of Amn, Deus Ex, RollerCoaster Tycoon 2... all considered retro by the 4chan board even though they were released after 1999.

Care to explain?

I don't mind that these games are discussed here; I'm just legit curious what makes a PC retro or not-retro.

According to the rules anything running on pre-1999 hardware fits here. Just like post 2000 PS1 or Dreamcast games.

>anything running on pre-1999 hardware fits here
So basically, if the game can run on Windows '98, it's retro?

>> No.4358793

All of those games have an old school philosophy and are so well liked by retro game fans the hall monitor types who want to argue about rules can't stop people from talking about them

I play shooters the most so I can analyze Deus Ex the best, and it's kind of the culmination of the old style of FPS game before Half-Life begat Call of Dooty and the genre became more about cinematics than trying to simulate being in a world. RollerCoaster Tycoon is an old style building game with extremely complex numbers you can dig into, Diablo II was the old fashioned CRPG format accelerated to maximum, I haven't played the other game but I'm sure something similar applies.

>> No.4358797

In the case of Diablo II and RCT2, they're sequels to popular retro games and follow the same style as their predecessors very closely, so they're tacitly accepted in any discussion involving those games.

Here's a better question. What makes the Dreamcast retro? It was released in 1999, but still a sixth gen console

Forgive me if I'm wrong, I've never been much into these games ( tribes 1/2 were the last) but any time I hear people talking about CoD ir the bits I've seen nephews play it etc, all that's ever talked about is multiplayer. And that doesn't seem cinematic.

The real question is that this board's rules make no sense and people arbitrarily ignore them depending on the popularity of the game. You can't simply draw an arbitrary line and never update the fucking thing as the years go by. And the
>this game was released after 1999 but feels retro
argument is retarded, the GBA also feels retro as fuck but for some retarded reason isn't considered retro here. And don't start me on the
>but it runs on Win98 lel xD
So does visualboy advance.

I imagine that if 4chan is still around in 2067, /vr/ will become "/vv/ - vintage games" or "/va/ - antique games", and the new /vr/ will be for 6th to 10th gen games or something like that.

>> No.4358842

They really fucked up naming this board /vr/
If augmented reality /vr/ ever gets to god tier status this shit needs to be renamed

>> No.4358846

>>4358829
That's true, but I'm comparing the singleplayer modes. Deus Ex also had a very complex multiplayer mode where you could interact with the environment much more than you'd see in something like COD, although it wasn't especially great. Most of the games that are out of the same tradition as Deus Ex had no multiplayer mode at all so it does become apples and oranges after a point I guess. Note that stuff like tribes is out of a very different tradition than the FPSRPG, one that's even deader nowadays or was until quake champions

You answered your own question. It fits this boards definition of retro by being released before 2000

I swear it's always you faggots. Why do you nintendo fags always want to be included in places that obviously hate them

That's a really good point. But maybe Diablo 2 and RCT 2 run on the same engines they did from the late nineties? And that's why?

GBA emulator may run on Windows '98, but it was never officially released for that platform.

>> No.4358867

>>4358852
I like the GBA but don't necessarily think it should be included. The way the rules are set up is retarded though that a game released in 2002 counts as retro if it's on the Dreamcast, but the exact same game in PS2 is not retro. And a game that came out a year before is also not.

They're just a mess.

I get that, but still think sixth gen consoles oughta be grouped together.

Just look at this screenshot of Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast. It looks like a GameCube title.

>> No.4358873

Ignore the fact this is called "Retro Videogames"

Just pretend it's called "Pre-1999 games"

The use of the word "retro" makes no sense and is fucking stupid, and it has everyone confused. Especially with Dreamcast being more modern in many ways than Gamecube, yet Dreamcast is allowed and Gamecube isn't.

nintendo handhelds were two generations behind technologically and they released a bunch of remakes on the advance. that doesn't make it retro.

This. Look at all those RCT 2 threads being made here. I mean, good for RCT fans because they seem like a peaceful bunch. But come on. Clear breaking of the forum rules there.

>> No.4358887

I agree in that all sixth generation consoles should be on here. As you said, the DC is actually pretty powerful, even though it was the first 6th gen system released.

The mods seem pretty set on not moving the 1999 thing, though.

Also now I want to play Dreamcast. Too bad my brother brought it with him when he moved out of province

Even then, would the "retro style" PC games be gone, as well? I doubt it.
