Non-retro Castloids are better.

Retro classic Castlevania is better.

SotN is still good, tho.

Super Castlevania on the SNES was great and had fantastic music, but some of the bosses had really shitty and unfair hitboxes. The original Castlevania was fun, but my favorite in the series is still SotN. It had the best atmosphere, gameplay, items, gear, bosses, enemies, and music.

I'm just getting into metroidvanias starter pack, first game.

It's a very unbalanced game with tons of filler content.

What do you mean? Dark Maria is Best Maria.

But no slowdowns ;)
Ideally, I'd recommend playing PSP first, and then the Saturn version for the extra stuff

youtube for shit and giggles, then go enjoy Norio Wakamoto as Dracula on the superior PSP version.

Even Guardian Knuckle was done better on Saturn.

Let's face it, Saturn Maria is just more fun to play in general. IGA's autism over inaccuracy be damned.

Let's face it, playing SOTN with Maria or Richter is cool for the novelty, but there's no point, you just go through rooms collecting hearts, it's clear the game was designed around Alucard and gaining powerups and new items. Feels very empty or pointless playing with the other 2 characters.
I like PSP Maria more, but Saturn Maria is alright.

Yeah, it's good... until you get to the Inverted Castle which is stupid.

>> No.4348835

SotN's full potential isn't realized until you play it for killing all the bosses in the fastest time with Richter/Maria only.

>> No.4348842

>>4348835
Wouldn't a boss rush mode would be better for that?
Strolling through all these corridors, looking for nothing, is very boring.
Full potential of the game is playing it blind with Alucard.
For Richter and Maria, the design should be more like classicvania (like, you should be able to die by missing a jump, for example). And the infinite air jump should be removed of course.

To be honest though, bosses on SOTN are also designed around Alucard. By playing Maria or Richter, the best way to deal with bosses is using the holy water storm, or the dragon in case of maria. Spam that shit until the boss dies. It's not fun.
And yeah you could do it differently, but what's the point?
With Alucard, you're not as overpowered and you need to experiment more with weapons and stuff.
Still, SOTN's bosses are kind of disappointed compared to classicvania bosses, which have more clear patterns, and are generally not cheesable.

A boss rush hack would be okay, but mapping out routes for getting to the bosses in the quickest time is also fun. Also why was HoD the only Castleroid to have a boss rush mode?

>but mapping out routes for getting to the bosses in the quickest time is also fun
I guess, what I did with Maria was try to get as much map completion as I could. I ended up not having much fun that way, but it was a nice way to revisit the castle and listen to the music, I guess.
>Also why was HoD the only Castleroid to have a boss rush mode?
DXC on PSP (the rondo remake) also has a boss rush mode, which is pretty cool. It even has co-op (ad hoc only)
