Is the Wii the easiest and best option for emulating old games?
You can just use a component cable and the 240p mode on Virtual Console games to get that native picture.

Also, is there a Wii .wad virtual console archive? Wii Shop Channel is closing down soon.

I'm pretty sure most, if not all the VC games have been dumped. Just Google it to find them.

Just letterbomb and install emulators. Easily the best way to emulate without using a desktop pc

Easiest and best way is to just emulate on PC or just buy the original systems and a flashcart.

>> No.4346140

Does anyone know if an archive exists of the Japan-only Wii shop channel releases? I know a handful of arcade games (like Mr. Do) made it onto the JP shop channel, but I've never been able to find a wad archive.

It is definately the cheapest. A wii cost anywhere from $10-20. And yeah using component on crt at 240p looks great.

I have a chrome URL to a collection of wii wads on the mega extention, if you have that extention, let me know if this URL works

I still hear a lot of mixed stuff in terms of whether Wii is the best for emulators. I had a lot of input lag, but I think that was my HDTV's fault. i hear some people claim retropie is better and then i hear the opposite

All I know is, a hacked Wii is pretty nice, just kind of annoying how closed off it is.

if what matters to you is getting the games running in 240p on a crt, it's the best option, but it sucks for emulating arcade games, hard. If you don't care about 240p or crts it's way easier to use any computer and the usb controller of your choice.

>Easiest and best way is to just emulate on PC or just buy the original systems and a flashcart.

Incorrect. Easiest, but not best.

Wii offers 240p output. Emulates past cart systems without issue. Can be modded to run games from external drive.

I have not gotten the external drive aspect working, and would love to.

My opinion is that the Wii is hands down the best retro-emulator. Wireless controllers, and controller support for all shapes and sizes and inputs.

Sure a computer is easiest, but a computer won't play Wii, Gamecube and EVERY cartidge based game ever with so little effort.

There is loads of work involved with setup, but once you get it it is flawless. Flash cards are dirt cheap, and so is external harddrives. Most of us here have that stuff just laying around.

to add on to that, it's not like wii+crt+wired controller is a lagless setup, I've ran tests to compare and real hardware always has less lag then any emulator I've tried on wii+crt

samefagging my post just to clarify and call out my bullshit.

I have not tried the n64 emulator on the wii. I own the actual hardware, so I only am speaking about:

Genesis, Snes and older cart systems. I have not had any problems with carts older than the n64 generation.

there's retroarch. I can't comment on accuracy because frankly I just can't discern myself (no reference point) but I believe noegeo works just fine. I enjoy playing Genesis and SNES on mine. Some odd stuff like neogeo pocket supposedly not working well at all though.

Ultimately PC is the best right now as it can run everything as close to perfect as possible. N64 emulation is still not very good but much better on PC than Wii which struggles with a lot of games still/forever. PC also runs psx and PS2 (not retro) on top of dolphin being able to emulate Wii and GC as well.

At the end of the day, I use my Wii for emulation but admit that PC offers better compatibility for more games.

depends on the emulator, fceugx is way less laggy than snes9x on wii for example. For the nes games I actually had to switch back and forth to notice the lag of about a couple of frames but for the snes games the lag was obvious right away.

>>4351464
>Show us your testing method and test results
that would require me testing all over again. I ran limited test with mostly mario games on nes and snes and their respective emulators on the wii, both plugged into a crt via composite. The tests for my own knowledge, I trust my senses and I know what I felt. Music is another hobby of mine and I've become very sensitive to input delay of any kind.

All that being said, wii+crt+wired controller is a great emulation setup that reduces lag to a very small amount, but don't be fooled and think you're getting no lag. Take a responsive game like mario world and the lag will still make the game feel completely different when emulating.

I see. For me, the lag in snes9x was noticable, but not for offical SNES VC. Did you test that out?

>> No.4352605

>>4352567
yes actually, the lag was much less noticeable in official vc of nes and snes games, probably around 1-2 frames. I used to think vc was lagless, and while it's impressive how little lag there is in vc games, when switching back and forth immediately between real hardware and emulation there is a difference.

yeah, i figured if there was lag it was probably a frame or two at most. i also did that same kind of test, alternating between real snes and wii vc quickly. it hasnt affected my gameplay yet, though i havent played much

Buy one on eBay with a broken disc drive. Once it's modded, you'll never use it.
