Retro game trivia thread!

>Crash Bandicoots disk had all its data towards the edge for faster load times. The rest of the CD was filled with garbage data to increase total size to dissuade pirates

>> No.4345996

Dreamcast pirates today claim putting data on the outside of the disc means lasers will last longer due to not moving as much. Probably doesn't make much of a difference though.

Dummy data has been used for a long time and I don't know that Crash was the first. If the disc has a filesystem you can usually reconstruct the image without it anyway. If the game has other checks well, that's when things get complicated.

Well, staying on Crash Bandicoot.

The demo for Crash Bash, included in demo disks and hidden in Spyro 3, included the entire fucking game accessible by cheats.

This was not discovered until 9 years after Crash Bash's release

Goldeneye 64 once supported all 4 major Bond actors as playable multiplayer characters. EGM announced this as a April Fools joke but there was some truth behind it

do you have proof of that? Which demos?

It makes a difference primarily because DC games all run under the assumption that the drive has a much lower seek time, due to the high density tracks. So bunching the data together on the outer rim means they perform closer to original discs and have less loading times compared to games in the inner ring.

Crash Bandicoot used constant seeking on the cd drive, so it had to use that to be faster. It was a very cleverly programmed game.

This cheat makes it possible to play the game with a new 6 Button controller scheme. You need a 6 button controller plugged into port 1 and any regular controller in port 2. Highlight "Options" on the main menu. Normally when you're in the Options menu, it says "Options" at the top, with an S on the end. Highlight Options but don't go into it yet. On Controller 1, hold the Mode button and on Controller 2, hold UP on the D-Pad and the C Button. With all these buttons held down, press Start on controller 1. Now you're in the Options menu, it now just says "Option" at the top without an S. This means 6 Button mode is on. This is what each button does. A is the Block button. B is a Melee attack. C is Jump X uses Ninjitsu magic Y and Z throw Shurikens This allows you to use Melee move at any time rather than at close range or when out of Shurikens. Enjoy!

Also Mario 2 is duck duck parsec

Nintendo tested the Game Boy's toughness by throwing Game Boys off the fucking roof.

Also there's a Game Boy on display at that Nintendo store in New York that survived a bombing in the Gulf War. Still works to this day, though they had to replace the screen.

There's also a golden diamond-encrusted Game Boy.

Discovered that cheat a few years back. It makes an already easy game even easier but wow is it fun. I'm "guessing" they left it out as an option since it breaks the game.
