While not as good, Donkey Kong 64. There are various moments in which you play a retro game, do a mini game, or have to use a power which alters how the game plays for a short time.

Obviously there aren't entire levels for a gimmick, but the rules are changed somewhat often due to the mini games.

He might mean that 90's edge. A lot of people tend to forget Jim was silliness, but underneath that veneer of XXTREME-tude. Probably because they kind of abandoned that angle as the series went on.
