Much as I have fond childhood memories of shooting nazis and eating dog food, Wolf 3D is really not a game I can enjoy for more than five minutes when I go back to it. The levels are just bad.

Now, Doom 1, there are levels that aged well.

Tried playing Wolf3D again after seeing this thread. It's too much. The level design is terrible and I never really know where I am or where I'm supposed to go. It just isn't fun to backtrack through the levels several times. Fond memories of this game on my 486, but it's not really playable today.

The ECWolf source port has an automap like in Doom. A huge improvement, but the game is still watching paint dry.

2) Remakes are allowed, RTCW is a remake of Wolf3D, and is therefore /vr/.

The obvious rebuttal to point 2 is that RTCW so little resembles Wolf3D, changes the plot completely that it's more of a reboot than a remake. It's kind of a Ship of Theseus thing. We tried having a thread about the GoldenEye remake/soft reboot but everyone chimped out and ruined it.

Spear of Destiny is massively underrated. It's a great game all the way through and has fun boss fights and a spectacular ending, which is more than I can say for Doom which has a lot of low points, boring boss fights and a weak ending.
