Never played it, heard it was overrated it.

Isn't it the game where Daisy originated from?

Its actually quite good but playing Game Boy games these days can suck, as in, We have so many better games to play. Not sure about Daisy i think thats the first one. this is the better sequel.

No, that was the first Super Mario Land.

Super Mario Land 2 introduced Wario.

I played it 20 years ago and I just started playing it last week for a few minutes a day, amazing level design which is to be expected

This is when they learned to work with the shortcomings of the system: Large sprites, slower gameplay, still fun.

Mario Land 1 never felt quite right. This one does.

It's a short, easy platformer with no replay value. Basically a quick and under-budgeted adaptation of Super Mario World for handheld. You just play it for the novelty, then forget it exists.

>> No.4342892

Played through this recently. As someone who is pretty tired of Mario I found this game to be fun. Good level design and I liked the world map. Will revisit it again sometime. Way better than the 1st Mario Land GB game.

>> No.4343041

>>4342832
It's far from forgotten. If anything, some consider it to be the last good Super Mario sidescrolling platformer before the not retro New Super Mario Bros. games, only new in name but not gameplay wise came along. Comparable to the 80s era, Nintendo made more games with a twist but unlike many NES classics, they're more based on established characters but that doesn't make them any less fun. I dare even say that the Wario Land and Yoshi games are just as good as the Super Mario classics.

I also like it how SML2 feels quite different in its designs but still manages to feel similar enough to SMB1-3 and SMW that it doesn't feel like it's too different or a "tacked on" Nintendo game. It's short and you won't replay it dozens of times unless you don't have many Gameboy games or games in general but for what it's worth, you can beat most of the levels in any order you want and there are a few secret exits so it's great for a Gameboy game but not exactly the most impressive platformer Nintendo made but again, who expected a game on the level of Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario World on a handheld in 1992 anyway?

Easily my favourite GB game, and my favourite Mario game in general next to the original. Even the boxart is incredibly iconic.

I love the intro to the boss theme.

Both Mario Land 1 and 2 are very near and dear to me, I’m dating myself hard but Mario Land 1 was my first Mario.

Both games are just wacky from aesthetic standpoints and are very novel. Mario Land 1’s hard mode is particularly great. This game, though slower and a bit more predictable, has great thematic elements, music, and an awesome final level. That gauntlet is never not-fun.

The Wario Land games are all superior, however.

>> No.4344610 [DELETED]

>>4342832
Because the game is depressing and disgusting. The world of that game is so weird, because the clockwork zone and the zone where mario gets shrinked and fights ants is so not mario. The music is sad for no reason. And there is no big fat titted peach with some juicy ass about to get graped by a huge monster.

>> No.4344641

Mario Land 1 is awesome, it feels like a game that came out of SMB1, but on a handheld.

SML2 is trying to be like SMW, but the large sprites made them make a floaty/slow game instead which is fun enough but not superior to SML1. As a kid I was super surprised by how "good" SML2 looked though.

SML2 is a weird game. It feels more like a proper Mario game than SML1, but I'll be damned if I didn't like the first game more. The small sprites in SML1 account for the fact that you can't see that far if they're normal sized, and the stage design was tighter.
Can't bring myself to really want to play SML2 that much.

SML1 has some really dumb shit (superballs can get stuck in a bouncing loop, you fall at max speed if you don't jump off a platform), but it's a great, if strange game.

I filled out the entire map about a dozen times that I can remember. I grew up with the game but eventually lost interest in my adulthood.

>It's literally nothing like SMW.
Overworld map, secret exits to hidden stages, somewhat non-linear progression, post-stage bonus games that reward you with power-ups and 1UPs. They both follow the same design.

Did YOU actually play the game?

Seeing this thread inspired me to play it through, so I've just spent the last 3 hours or so doing just that. It was a lot shorter than I was expecting, and a little on the easy side. SML1 feels like a Mario brothers 1 portable

SML2 feels like a Mario world portable.

It's pretty easy to understand why both feel like Mario games. At that point in time Mario was poorly defined

>Arcade game
>Donkey Kong
>Mario bros 1
>Mario 2
>Mario 3
>Tetris
>Break out
>Mario Tennis (maybe?)

Maybe wasn't defined very well. He was just the generic fill in man and in his own games he had 3 vastly different games. Even on the Gameboy you have SML1, SML2 and Wario land (SML3) who are all radically different from each other.

That was one of the coolest moments for me. Fighting the final boss from the first game but without the help of your plane felt pretty cool.

Wish Wario would take up the role of major antagonist more often. His gang of mooks and crooks were fun to fight against.

>> No.4351965

I could never get into the wario land games, though I only tried the first one. I like Mario because I can run fast and just jump over shit and dodge danger. The Wario games seem a lot slower and more focused on exploration. Is that an accurate assessment? Becaus for me exploration in a platformer is nice as a bonus thing or for repeat playthroughs, but as a focus I don't think it's really my thing. But I'd like to know if my impression is right before I write off the series as not for me.

Because it is a bad Mario game. The physics are terrible and the bunny item is so overpowered when you can just glide through every level. It's boring.

I bought my copy of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins...with Kool-Aid Points off of the back of drink mix packets from their Wacky Warehouse.

750 points, to be exact. Most Kool-Aid packets were 1 point a piece. It's a wonder I don't have goddamn diabetes. This is actually the exact advertisement I saw to get the game.

As far as the game itself, I had a lot of fun playing it, it was a different kind of Mario experience, but close enough to how the NES games were that it felt right.

You are correct.

The even Wario titles (2 and 4) are pretty straightforward platformers, although 2 has tons of branching paths achieved through different objectives. The odd titles (1 and 3) have some broader world-based mechanics, where levels and their outcomes change based on over-arching elements.
