Some dude on /r/emulation has an okay post explaining it, but the game is actually a huge pain in the ass to make work in English, from a technical standpoint. Right now the only emulator that can support this is the newest version of Higan

>>4342727
>IIRC byuu who did the initial work needlessly made it use a completely custom mapping so it needs on of his special manifests.
Why do you retards even try to spout this shit? The reason it uses the XML manifest is because there was some insane amount of work done to make the menus and shit work with the expanded text.

The rom not working properly on real hardware is mostly just that- a side effect. It's actually because of the expanded rom size, if you think that this was some big conspiracy to stop repro makers you're on some serious drugs. It's a great aside, but hardly the primary or even a real reason for what has been done.

>> No.4343346

The game just won't work after patching it.
What am I doing wrong? I don't know what try anymore.
It goes like this.

1- Drop the .sfc (let's call it tmz.sfc) file in the SNESPurify. It creates a new folder tmz.sfc with a program.rom and a manifest.xml.

2- Patch program.rom using Lunar IPS (the 5MB file becomes a 7MB file).

3-Run TMZeroHiganFileSplitter, open program.rom and create a new folder Tengai Makyou Zero.sfc. This folder contains data.rom, expansion.rom, program.rom.

At this point I just don't know what to do anymore. I guess I should move those files to the same folder of the game, but now I have 2 program.rom, and one of them (the 1 MB file) clearly isn't the game. If I ignore the 1 MB file the game will run fine, but it will freeze after running the 2 initialization screens.

Adding the .bml file to the folder also does nothing.

Because the shit is confusing. Basically, any game with the English Far East Of Eden in the title is based off of a fake book written by a fake author (the series' creator's alias). The story is suppose to be some weird retelling of Jipang's history by foreigners. Tengai Makyou is the series as a whole (and is literally translated as something like "devil world outside of heaven"). Not ever game is apart of the FEoE books even if they're a Tengai Makyou game.

It's confusing shit.

Basically, calling it FEoEZ isn't correct because the game's title is TMZ with the FEoE monicker on the cover relating the fact it's part of those fake books.

People like to bring up the same one or two points the first whistleblower on a JP-exclusive game brings up. It's the dame as with Linda Cubed supposedly being "the whackiest jrpg alive" when it really wasn't, even for the time. Any Mad Max/Tank Girl/dieselpunk fan will get to enjoy it, sure, but its strong suit is really just in the slow-burning, homesick feeling that brews up by the time you finish each scenario.

The "America's misconceptions if Japan" bit us also really off with the series as a whole. Each game is significantly anachronistic, but most of the main ones (Manjimaru mostly comes to mind) is pretty bigoted and pivots more on Japanese stereotypes on other groups, and not even in creative ways. I like the series, but while the cinematic value in the games is strong, the humor comes off as juvenile to a fault. Same with Apocalypse IV and Fuun Kabuki Den.

For what it"s worth, one of the JP concerns with Sakura Wars was it coming off as Nazi-sympathetic at the time. Not as in supporting Nazis or anything, but by brushing off the issue the same way Hetalia did by going "Oh jiminy, Germany is acting weird today. He mudt be going through a hard time."

Ouji Hiroi is kind of the sensationalist in the entire thing. Not that Shoji Masuda(stand-in director for Ziria and Manjimaru to a point) was all that better, but when you also look at Gulliver and his other older work, it is easier to blame Hiroi for that issue in the series as a whole.

So the first reviews were really by people who A. didn't see an issue with the kiddish stereotype p/incorrectness in the game that isn't offputtingly offensive, but just outdated even for people who even care about that stuff (Outdated as in "oh lol black people love that fried chicken lol" old shit we all got over in middle and high school), or B. Really just liked the cinematic appeal and figured something funny was going on w/out actually understanding the context of the joke and assumed the joke was novel.

The one thing that might actually work in English and doesn't spoil too much:
The first boss is called. ぜったいレイド which works as a title in the way of The absolute Reido (絶対レイド) but at the same time also means Absolute Zero (絶対零度) in terms of temperature.
A lot of stuff with the Taoists revolves around unsuaual word readings and Zyuri will quiz you about your kanji skills.

we are talking about how tengai makyou zero was translated and how some guy claims that nobody would be able to get anything out of it without maybe years of study, and then you randomly ask me to explain what some kanji means and post a random quiz game like it's going to help your case when i already said i don't read jap..

There's no standard for Arabic. Even Russian/Cyrillic gets all over the place since you get a Romanization into English, a Romanization into German, a Romanization into French and so on.
In Japanese you tend to deal with a mix of Hepburn, Kunrei and Nihon with the addition of word processor shit, e.g. Tengai Makyou instead of Tengai Makyô or Tengai Makyō.
