I still can't believe that they originally wanted to release it on the NES.

Play Chex Quest instead. It's another non-violent 2.5D FPS, except it's actually well made.

Or Depth Dwellers.

Or better yet, Corridor 7

I have the CD-ROM for this. Which version plays better?

Depth Dwellers suck.
Play Marathon, Blake Stone and/or Rise of the Triad instead if you're interested in pre-Doom FPS.

And if you're looking for non-violent shooters - anon who said Chex Quest was on the right track, but there is also official and unofficial sequel.
There's also I.M.Meen which is pretty similar to Noah except with grammar instead of bible, and less suck.

CD-Rom one is better with extra stuff like higher resolution and floor/ceiling textures, but definitive version is the Steam one, it runs on ECWolf sourceport and includes stuff like separate keys for strafing and an automap. Also if you're worried about the price, majority of proceeds go into development of ECWolf source port, so a noble cause indeed.

Basically, Wisdom Tree, of all companies, wanted to make a Hellraiser game for the NES, so they acquired the rights to make a Hellraiser game and licensed the Wolf3D engine from id.

Eventually though they abandoned making a Hellraiser game because the coprocesor they designed for the cart (basically a SuperFX for the NES) had brought the price of cart up to something like $150, and by the time the first prototype had been completed Doom had already been released on the SNES.
That's when they scrapped their work and transferred development over to making Noah's Ark 3D
