Can you define "anime games"? There are plenty of Genesis/MD games with an anime art style even if they aren't directly based on anime. Also keep in mind that the SNES was far more popular in Japan.

It's interesting if you like the source material.
As a game it plays kind of like an adventure game, but instead of point and click you explore the maps walking in 4 directions like an RPG, but there's no battles, and you can only really lose and die in a couple parts in the game (if you fail certain puzzles).
The inventory has a lot of issues and some of the backtracking and puzzles can drag a lot, but it pays out in the end.
It starts like the anime, but has a completely different ending.

Basically, the Mega Drive came late and NEC was a much bigger and more trusted brand than Sega at the time, so the PC Engine gobbled up the market for non-Nintendo consoles in Japan before the Mega Drive even had a chance. Otaku in particular flocked to the PC Engine due to its CD drive allowing for things like voice acting and lots of space for artwork. The Mega CD again came too late, and was shockingly expensive compared to NEC's offering.

Toward the end of the Mega Drive's life it started picking up some steam in Japan, mainly thanks to the appeal of its large foreign library, but it was still thoroughly trounced by the mighty SFC. At least it set Sega up for success with the Saturn, though.

The SFC, of course, got plenty of "anime games" simply due to its sheer ubiquity.

It was called the "Genesis" because Mega Drive was already taken in the U.S. It was originally called Mega Drive outside the U.S. The original man was bronze/tan/brown, not black. Hence why there's more people with normal hair & lighter skin tones than there are blacks.

Sonic runs more like Speedy Gonzelez or Road Runner. Not like any human on earth. Megadrive didn't have many anime titles because SNES was the go-to childrens console in Japan. Megadrive was geek tier and PC Engine was gamer nerd only tier.

However the Mega CD did get a bunch, most notably the Urusei Yatsura games, which had superb animation.

There's plenty of "anime" games on the Megadrive? In any case, the console was more popular in the west than in Japan. Also, the Japanese love their RPGs, and RPG developers loved SNES because an RPG would benefit a lot from the huge color palette, but RPG gameplay is generally too slow to really benefit from the areas the MD excelled in.
