Can anyone on /vr/ recommend a good USB gamepad for emulation? Anything I can find on eBay looks like Chinese garbage. I've been pouring over reviews, but most of them say the gaming pads I've looked at are incredibly fragile and have issues right out of the box.

Is there possibly anything decent within the range of USD$10 - $20?

Pic related looks very comfortable, but this model doesn't have a USB connection. None of the early ProPads do.

I've got retrolink SNES and NES controllers. They're alright, but I'm no purist.

Yeah I dunno anything in that price range is probably junk unless you get lucky with second-hand

You can probably find a Logitech F310 for $15-25 online. Be aware, people seem to have very mixed results with it. Some say it works perfect, others have issues soon after they start using it. Mine serves its purpose though and I like it well enough. Have had it for a few years now. The triggers can dig into your fingers after prolonged use but I don't emulate that many games that use R2/L2 a lot so it's a non-issue. I thought the D-pad looked like ass at first but it plays well.

>>4336139

Seriously, don't listen to anyone who recommends you anything retro. Just go with wired xbox 360 pad. It's one of two best controllers for emulation (the other is ds4).

Retrolink controllers have some pretty bad reviews. That's a brand I was told to steer clear of.

>>4336195

I haven't had much success with Logitech items. It's really a case of "you get what you pay for."

But yeah, that's the problem with being on a budget.

>>4336231

It's getting difficult to find first-party controllers. I just see dozens of Chinese clones, even from U.S. sellers.

What I'd really like is something like this anon's pic >>4334289
But searching for "USB Saturn controller" on eBay yields yet more Chinese junk.

Try Buffalo's SFC style pad. Comfortable, sturdy, good button feel; I've had no complaints so far.

I got a Retrolink SNES pad and it's a piece of absolute shit. Do not recommend.

Also 360 is only good for modern games - the dpad makes it pretty unusable for 2D games.

>>4336259

Yeah, I admit, x360 dpad is pretty disgusting. They fixed it in xbone pad though, I'm currently using xbone s pad for emulation and it's really good, dpad a bit too clicky for me, but other than that - best controller for pc.

There are some systems that really need their own original controllers to play properly.

Nintendo 64
Nintendo Gamecube
Playstation 2
Nintendo Wii
Nintendo WiiU

I listed the systems which have some type of working emulations that require their original controllers.

why:
>N64
7 face buttons 3 triggers and an unique analogue stick and a D-pad. using anything than the original or a replica is just painful. Original has usb adapters available for cheap, and as for replicas the 8bitdo x retrobit USB/Bluetooth is the one you want to get.
>Gamecube
While for the most part you can be fine with an Xbox One or 360 controller there is a small oddity that nothing but the original or a replica has, and that is the double action L and R triggers, they have a digital button click after you pull them all the way down. You can do without it even in games that use it but you'll have to be mindfull of it to not press the trigger (on xbox controller) all the way down as dolphin would register that as the click. Retrolink makes a decent USB replica, there are adapters for the original.
>PS2
While you can match the buttons fine with a n xbox controller the PS2 has pressure sensitive face buttons and many games take advantage of it. Therefore you either need an original PS2 controller with adapter, or a PS3 controller. Or a third party one, i cannot recommend any.
>Wii
Should be obvious, connects straight to your PC's bluetooth, just need a sensor bar for your PC or use 2 candles. Sensor bars can be bought cheap for USB or battery power.
>wiiU
needs the wiiU pro controller due to to motion sensors.

NES, SNES PS1, Master System, Genesis you should be fine with an xbox one controller but if you want authenticity there are adapters for originals or you can get usb replicas or 8bitdo's superb bluetooth snes controller.

Any of the Dualshocks, really.

DualShock 2 can be used with a PS2 to USB adapter cable but idk if that pushes it out of budget.

A DS3 used has the benefit of being Bluetooth but you need a dedicated adapter for it as the driver disables the standard BT stack. Works fine wired though if you don’t care about that. It can be found for like $20 on eBay.

A DS4 is the best option due to it using standard Bluetooth but it’s pricey and in my experience I’ve had horrible latency issues over PC Bluetooth. With a PS4 it works fine but over PC I get 10ms latency often. I switched to DS3 and it’s perfect.

I don’t recommend using a 360 pad because the dpad is shit for 2D.

I guess I should’ve mentioned I only use it from the couch so that’s why I had to switch because of the latency. Wired wasn’t really an option without ugly cables running the floor but I had 2 ds3’s laying around. Easy. Still a great controller though. Easily the best dpad

Honestly go for the Dualshock 2. I had a mega collection of retro controllers / usb adapters, and I can honestly tell you I now only use my DS2.

>Great shape of controller, if it aint broke don't fix it design inspired by the classic SNES controller.
>Cheap as shit. There are so many PS2 consoles on ebay / amazon, you can get them in large quantities
>Rugged, can take a beating
>Excellent d-pad that just works and well responsive
>Good sticks / buttons all around

Just use an adapter plus a used controller you buy locally. That way you can feel it before you buy it. Are oem PS2 and SNES controllers getting so expensive this is no longer a $10-$20 option?

Xbone has a much better Dpad than 360. They finally got it right on their 3rd attempt.
PS3 is better yet but you need a 3rd party driver (Better DS3). I don't own a PS4 controller, but that looks like a good choice, I assume it supports DirectInput

I had to do a lot of looking into this before I came to the conclusion that the triggers are probably not going to be analog, since it's being marketed and sold primarily as a Switch controller, to the point of it having home and screenshot buttons.
The d-pad and face buttons are also pushed up on the controller to make room for the analog sticks while keeping the overall shape.

That said, it's probably still going to be the best USB controller for retro games because it's a full-featured controller with the SNES d-pad and supports Xinput natively.
Not big on the inclusion of gyro controls, which I'm sure will add to the battery drain during regular use and increase the price quite a bit.
