Not a good idea considering the game keeps track of how many times you've died. If you want a perfect ending screen, you can't lose any lives.

I don't remember it being a thing in the SNES version, but the game definitely tracks how many lives you've used in the GBA version. After beating all the extra levels, you get a cutscene telling you how many Yoshi's you've "used" to get to the island, and you're ranked accordingly. If you play with no deaths, you're the 1st Yoshi to arrive to Bowser's castle. Whatever rank you get shows up in the title screen.

So yes, at least in the GBA if you want to get the best rank you need to 100% every level without dying.

>> No.4331318

>>4331308
They add nothing to the game, they're just bonus levels.

It's like saying some JRPG sucks because you need to level up for hours to beat some optional super boss that gives you a special item you don't need when you beat it.

SNES Link to the Past tracks how many lives you use and shows them during the credits. They're called "games/games played" on the SNES.

GBA Link to the Past also tracks them and shows them in the same manner during the regular credits, but more appropriately calls them "lives". If you beat the Palace of the Four Sword, it shows an extra ending (showing how things are in the Dark World instead of the Light World) and it shows how many times you've used each item, including the sword. Pic related.

>> No.4331359

>>4331351

Are you sure about that? The death counter may not appear until you beat the game. To my knowledge, Twilight Princess is the only game without a death counter.

>> No.4331361

>>4331358
Doesn't work properly on Link to the Past, though, because if you save and quit it still counts as a death, at least in the snes version.

>> No.4331362

Yes, this is correct. The only way to get a "'000 lives/games played" on the SNES version is to finish the game without ever saving and quitting. After the credits roll, the game saves the 0 counter and then you can save and quit all you want.

On the GBA, this was removed (I'd say "fixed") and you can save and quit all you want without it counting as dying.

Oh yeah, I remember now. I actually did that once. It really doesn't take that long to play through the game, and overall it's not as hard as it might sound like, so I'm not sure if it really counts as an oversight that needed to be "fixed".

>> No.4331381

>>4331371
>The only way to get a "'000 lives/games played" on the SNES version is to finish the game without ever saving and quitting.

Zelda II pulled the same kind of shit, although it was Game Over that counted against you, not individual loss of player lives. Using the save code counted as a Game Over.

I found this odd since LoZ1's save code didn't increase the KO counter as well.

Adding to this, I think it makes sense not to punish players for saving on a handheld console no matter what the original intent was.

I haven't played any post-GBA Zelda game, but I don't remember Minish Cap having a death counter either. I'm looking now and there isn't one on the save file or during the credits. I thought it did, but I'm clearly confusing it with the Oracle games.
