Sunk a lot of money into AvP and Tekken 3 back in the day. We had a little hole in the wall arcade in our shopping mall, so we didn't get many new titles. First time I visited as I kid I was blown away by Virtua Fighter and MKII. Virtua Fighter looked like a movie you could play to me and the digitized MK actors looked photo realistic.

Was at the county fair in the early 90's wandering around by myself(it wasn't seen as poor parenting back then) when I found a tent full of arcade games. Didn't have any money but I kept watching demos and others play. All I had at home was a 2600 so these games seemed amazing. Came across a technician trying to repair a game. Kept asking him questions about what he was doing and why he had to do that what his name was etc etc. He finally gave me a dollar to go away. Blew it in 5 minutes playing Toki.

I was playing Marvel Superheroes vs. Street Fighter and had gotten to Cyber Akuma when some moving guys showed up to take a broken cabinet out for repairs, and the MSHvSF cabinet was in their way because they can't into curving with a dolly, and they couldn't wait for me to win or die.

The next time I got that close, some shadow assassin dropped in his tokens and hit the P2 Start button just as I was about to deliver the final combo to Cyber Akuma. Then he picked two secret characters and used what he had learned from watching me to beat me, then he got to start at the boss and beat him without having to go through all the trouble of fighting the selectable characters first. Bastard.

Used to go to some arcade in oregon called wunderland where all the games took nickles.

Most of the games were closer to a quarter but it was still great, was around the time killer instinct dropped.

I loved playing revolution x, die hard arcade, simpsons arcade, punisher arcade, t-mek, mk3, etc

I went to Mission Control in Santa Ana today. Played for 4 hours on 15 dollars. The 15 pinball machines were the main attraction, including this kickass EM game. The selection of video was nice, but there's a place closer to my house that's a little better. Unfortunately, two of the best games were out of order, Assault and Afterburner. They did have a dedicated Total Carnage which was awesome, I've never seen one on location before.

Virtua Fighter 3 was the buffer space between Tekken 3 and Marvel Vs. Capcom. There would be lots of people playing and spectating around t3 and MVC, shouting and trash talking the whole way. If anyone dared to try the VF3 machine, they'd get sized up, insulted, and intimidated away for fear of getting shot or stabbed, leaving a game still running, but no one would take over a still running game. I wonder why the arcade owners would keep VF3 around instead of an empty space eating up electricity.

Kay. Its summer, late august, perhaps even early september. I am at my local arcade playing SFIICE and Samurai Shodown. After like 30 minutes i got my fix, and i am about to leave, as on my way out i discover a new game that i didn't notice when walking in. Volume was all the way down. So i get a little closer. The mysterious game has an envelope rotating, and i wonder if its a new irem shooter or something. Envelope stops and terry bogard flashes past the screen. And i am like wow-fatal-fury-3!! New SNK fighting game, my lucky day.

The the title screen reads 'The King of Fighters 94'. And i am totally like WTF.

So i am dropping my last coin in there and since i just bought a neo geo, i am desperate to see as much of the game as i can. Mai's cleavage animation has my jaw drop to the floor. I finish that game on one coin. As i leave the arcade i determine i need this game.

Point is, back then arcade games would just drop out of the blue. Gaming magazines were print and as such 3 months behind whats going on in the world. I kind of miss that magic. In a way internet was the worst that could happen to games...

I can somehow imagine 80's Sierra adventure games played at an arcade seeing as how easily you can kick the bucket in those games

We had a little local arcade called Tilt. Had the whole 90s pink neon "A E S T H E T I C" going on. Had 4 ski ball machines, a couple basketball ones, but the rest was video games. Through the years some of my favorites were Hard Drivin, Sinistar, MK (all of them), Street fighter, Simpsons, and several others. Playing fighters in person against others was THE WAY they were meant to be played. I remember beating the simpsons with a rotating group of people.

I once found Metal Slug X there, having never heard of it, I decided to try it. Damn fine game and one of my favorites.

Now, that was our first "real" arcade. There were bowling alleys, laundromats, gas stations and Wal-Mart. The bowling alleys had more classic games like Dig Dug, Pacman, etc. I remember playing Bad Dudes at a little gas station, had fun with that one.

Wal-mart had a rotation, WWF arcade, Joust, Shinobi were the ones I remembered most. I actually found a FUCKING JOUST PINBALL!!! machine in the wild at a local Wal-mart. It was the best (and rare as shit) pinball game I've ever played.

These were all later in around 93-96 or so. I remember growing up, there were two skating rinks which had all kinds of games. The one in a town about 30 miles away had Time Killers, which I fucking loved. 5 buttons for each body part. They got cut off and you could be fighting hopping on one leg with just a head lol.

The local skating rink had a fuckton of games. I enjoyed burger time, but the one I spent most money and time on was Double Dragon 2. I loved it as a kid.

I also remember county fairs having arcades in tents. One fair had a neo geo game, I forget which, but you had 3 players (fighting) and you could tag them in, I really liked that one. Also had Bomberman at that one.

I remember a different fair having Cruisin USA. It was a newer game. I remember playing it on hard difficulty and getting my initials in every top score there.

My uncle had a small arcade set up in his garage. It is there I played Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, my first video game. My cousin and I didn't really know what we were doing because we were toddlers, but I thought the graphics were stunning. For whatever reason I "mained" Sindel. I think it set the seeds for my current fighting game obsession.

He eventually sold it for a Golden Tee cabinet.

2. Public spaces and entertainment areas suffer.
3. Town basically closes down after dark, no walking or biking around anymore.

I lived in the country and despite liking games never enjoyed being in arcades much, but I do have one good story.

A few of us had gone to see Mortal Kombat and after while waiting for my friends to piss I put a quarter in an MK2 machine in the lobby and in the middle of my first round some guy comes and challenges.

He I was Mileena, he takes Liu and first round I beat him perfect, mostly because it was 90% teleport kicks and roll spamming. Second round he finally hits me with a fireball and I actually stopped playing for a second and in the most indignant tone I could I muster said "you ruined my flawless!" and then spammed him to death.

But then he goes to walk away but his younger brother stops him and says "wait look!" and he watched with a big grin as Mileena did her gore fatality and the dude just glared at me the whole time.

Growing up in Vegas, it was a real treat to go to the arcades because they would usually be chock full of arcades with the latest games and everything is in a deluxe cabinet.

I remember going to Circus Circus when I was young and it would be packed with people playing everything. They had so many arcade games that they had a little group of games on the ramp going up to the midway.

Back then arcades were a sight to behold for everyone. Young and old people came out to try out the latest machines.
Now that the novelty is over with, there's just no demand for them.

Like a Sega Rally clone published by Namco, Breakers Revenge, A Mario Bros-themed Pinball Machine, Super Ninja Baseball Batman, a 4-Slot Neo-Geo with Shock Troopers, Sengoku 3, Kizuna Encounter and some kind of Bomberman game... But the most unusual I can recall was a Speed Racer game that featured 3D polygonal environments, but sprite-based cars, obstacles and gimmicks. (Saws, Oil Slicks, Spike Traps Etc. Etc.) To this day, I haven't even cone close to seeing that game and I haven't had luck in even finding YouTube video of game play for it.

Maybe not during a /vr/ period, but the games mostly were retro and arcades are pretty much a retro phenomenon in the west, so here goes.

There was a mall arcade which lasted a little ways into the 2000s about 20-30 minutes down the highway from where I lived as a kid, and I'd always love to get to go there at the end of boring shopping trips. Every now and then when mom was out of town, my dad would drive us up just to hang out there. It wasn't very huge, just about the size of an average mall shoe store (which eventually fucking replaced the place, bastards), but had some pretty good stuff from the little that I can remember. My dad always went straight to the Galaga machine, while I at first gravitated toward Bubble Bobble, then almost exclusively played Marvel vs. Capcom once I learned that Mega Man was in it. I was generally content to just spam buster and Hyper Mega Man along with general fucking around as War Machine. They also had a big ol' Soulcalibur machine, though I never got to play it since my folks said no to the GameCube game, being T-rated and all. Still fun to watch the big kids go at it.

One time some teenager came and tried to knock out the little kid to play with his friend, and so I was pretty intimidated, being the sub-10-year-old that I was. I kept at it at any rate, and actually wound up beating him. He left, perceptibly fuming, and from behind me I heard a faint "You lost to HIM??" followed by some angry complaining about my playing. His friend then put in a credit and smacked my shit, but I was still rather proud of myself.

A little while ago I found that there is a local arcade/import shop with a bunch of Japanese cabs and whatnot a little ways from where I'm situated now. As my friend was driving us up through the barren highway to get there, I got the same old feeling that I realized I always got on the trip up to the Mentor arcade of old. Good times.

>"no not really, if I'm losing it's not fun"
>forces us to leave early since he's our ride
>also had jammed one of their pinball machines coin slots with a nickel

To top it all off, the place was cash only and he didn't have any, so he was mooching off of my quarters all night. Had to buy his drinks too.

>be young bandwagon fag born in late 90s
>get into retro Freshman year of high school, start collecting and visiting arcades
>only good ones are an hour or more away, still worth it
>almost always go alone, only other friend who likes old games would never go for unspecified reasons
>the closer one had a huge selection on pinball machines, and a whole aisle of nothing but fighting games
>make the rounds, play my favorites, get high scores
>not great at fighters but still practice since I don't own a fight stick
>playing SFII for a while, when suddenly
>Here Comes a New Challenger!
>wtf
>Middle eastern dude with his kid pops a quarter in without saying a word
>He picks Guile, I pick Honda like a scrub
>Totally whoops my ass, we go a few rounds and I win once as Ryu
>We chat, he explains he played in tournaments back in the day and it stuck with him as muscle memory
>I say I only play the CPU on my Super Nintendo so that's why I'm not that good
>He assumes I'm older and I meant in the 90s, but I clarify
>He gets a hoot out of it and he's glad we got to fight, says he misses the old arcade scene and he wishes I could've been there
>Go our separate ways
>Never get a chance to play SF local with anyone since then
>Now a poor college student with no car, can't go to the arcade for a while
>That arcade closed down just last year

Bums me the fuck out. I like reading your stories though, must've been wild. I really want to keep this culture alive, there's nothing like it.

I was about 6 at an arcade with a sibling playing Goonies.

Some old guy (probably about 50 at the time) grabbed me and pulled me half the way to the entrance before he let go.

I used to holiday in Portugal as a young lad with my family, and in the area we went to almost every bar was family-oriented; as such, they usually had arcade machines, specifically MVS machines with what I guess was multicarts in 'em to occupy kids. I played the absolute god damned hell out of Puzzle Bobble 2 and Metal Slug 2/X whenever I got the chance, but I'd never see MVS cabs again for a long, long time after we stopped going (I'm a Britfag, arcades aren't so big here and certainly not in my area).

Fastforward to last year, visiting Tokyo with a few friends, and we're wandering around Super Potato Akiba. We eventually get to the top floor, and lo and behold it's only Metal fucking Slug X running on a cab. Man what a rush of nostalgia it was playing it on proper hardware again. We didn't really have a proper look around for arcades with older machines at the time, but certainly will be on the next trip over.
