I remember when I was a kid and got a SNES for a birthday present, which was my first console. I spent one morning before school stocking up on lives in Super Mario World so when I got home I'd have plenty to work with.

Was annoyed when I fired up SMW that afternoon...

Eh. I find it adds to SOR1 and 2. Makes you manouver around each other and communicate, instead of just forming the invincible Punchblob.

I haven't played loads of beat em ups, so I dunno if it's super shitty in many others

"HEARD YOU NIGGAS WERE TALKING ABOUT SHITTY SAVE SYSTEMS; HOW ABOUT THIS FUCKIN USELESS PASSWORD SYSTEM?!

>> No.4330031

Life systems that bother me sometimes are the ones on games with unlimited continues and save systems where if you have less than the base number of lives is easier to just kill yourself to game over to reset the counter since you don't lose anything by doing it. Why not just reset the counter once you get into the stage select?

Not the guy who mentioned it and not a retro game, but Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter has this New game+ system that increases your rank based on how well you did on your playthrough. Having a higher rank unlocks new areas with chests.
Then, every single time you save, it reduces this score. So a perfect play requires 0 saves.

>> No.4330818

Most of the time this kind of system is wasted by the game not having the balls to actually challenge the player

Not retro but goddamn I hate Digital Devil Saga for doing this shit. Press turns and demon transformation are both fun and interesting, random battles every ten steps is not. And the dungeons are so fucking long, too. Makes you start running away from battles just because you don't want to have to slog through them.

To provide a retro example of a fun battle system that gets really tedious really fast, Skies of Arcadia's ship battles are really cool, but waiting for thirty seconds every move for the ship to swing around and get into position gets really dull.

Animal Crossing for Gamecube came packaged with a memory card specifically for the game, which it took up completely. Although it also came with a cute sticker to put on the card.

Kinda makes me wonder how the N64 version did it.
