Autobahn is gorgeous. I love the trees and the sun beginning to set. The combination of wide road and divided road is fun.

Coconut Beach > Devil Canyon > Cloudy Mountain > Seaside Town > Autobahn

Passing Breeze > Cruising Line > Magical Sound Shower > Camino a Mi Amor > Splash Wave

I don't particularly have a favorite route but I love the look of Cloudy Mountain just that one part where you are driving down that straight away surrounded by trees with tons of clouds in the sky.

For whatever reason the PC Engine often got better versions of Sega games than Sega did on their own Mega Drive. After Burner II is another good example, where even the PCE version gets sprite scaling effects while the MD one doesn't.

OutRun would be amazing if it didn't have so much traffic avoiding bullshit. As much as some of these arcade racers can be fun, I can't say that I appreciate the design where the tracks are simple and straightforward, but you spend most of the game trying not to crash into a truck that's just decided to change lanes in front of you.
Honestly I recommend playing with Cannonball and setting traffic to low or even turning it off.

Come on anon, that's part of the fun. The randomized traffic helps make it less boring once you've memorized the layout of each route. I'd argue that Outrun wouldn't be Outrun without the traffic. Same with Road Rash and NFS, the traffic adds life and variety to the game world, especially since in Outrun there are no other opponents to race against

Well alright, you have a point. I still set it to low, but it feels pretty barren without any.
I just feel like most of these 2D racers placed the main difficulty on traffic instead of mastering corners and maximizing time, and it's not ideal. I still love OutRun, Rad Racer and even Pole Position up to a point. I guess I'll continue getting gud.

The traffic will move away for you on straightaways, and the collision detection is very forgiving when passing cars around corners. With a little practice, you'll find the traffic isn't really a big deal.

Saturn for home console (DC version has bad sound emulation and ports on other systems do too)

3DS for content and handheld, Seriously M2 are gods.

Cannonball if you like emulating and its like in the middle between saturn and 3DS imo.
