>playing fallout for the first time
>go to junktown, learn about gizmo and the skulz
>this would be good to talk to Killian about
>get more or less the same info from Killian
>stop talking to him, gu walks in, announces he's a rep of Gizmo, and starts shooting
>oh shit
>get my gun out to help, watch as others join the fight
>guy is dead, I helped some
>guards go back to post
>I talk to Killian expecting some reaction about this
>dialog options are the same
>ask him specifically about Gizmo and the Skulz, same text as before
>guards who fought alongside me warn me to holster my gun before walking back to same location and don't change behavior at all

What's that about /vr/? I thought that this game was supposed to be a well-thought out roleplaying experience. Yet some guy barrels in with a shotgun shooting to kill, and after he's dead there is zero change in behavior? I mean maybe it was silly of me to think that just because I wandered in and saw violence take place, that I somehow I should become his trusted individual to go check out the situation. I understand that, and clearly I was not taking the game seriously in that aspect. But even so, I expected SOME kind of response to what just took place beyond "ho-hum bad guy is dead, let's go back to our normal cycle even though our leader just took two shotgun blasts to his chest courtesy of the local seedy casino operator"

sounds like a glitch actually. the thing you expected to happen is actually supposed to happen. try reloading a prior save

Ha, I didn't save. Whatever, all of 15 minutes lost. Guess I get to fight cave rats again.

Is this kind of thing common to old RPGS? Potentially game-breaking glitches causing key events to not occur?

Gee I don't know.

You need to hit the assassin tonget credit. Maybe you just shot at him and missed. Killian gives you a little reward if you do it. The guards will still warn you to holster your shit.

That's common to RPGs in general, lol. Particularly the more open-world ones.

Lots of games, old and new, have glitches. Having a game-breaking one that comes up during normal gameplay is kind of a problem. From the sound of things however, this is a typical point of RPGs, so I guess that I'm just uninitiated with the genre. Still pretty weird though.

Well Fallout and Fallout 2 had some bugs when it was released so a patch is mendatory. But I wouldn't call this game-breaking (just quest breaking).

The moment the assassin is killed *and* you contributed to the fight (just wounding the assassin is alright) Killian immediately asks you for help in snuffing out Gizmo.

You must have some sort of a bug.
