Shumps got some good one but nothing outright superior over capcom or neogeo.

The Saturn is one of the biggest pieces of shit ever made. Imagine a console with all of the PS1's technical issues, somehow weaker despite being physically larger, and with 1/3 as many titles. That's the Saturn for you. Are there good games? Yeah, a few. Guardian Heroes, Dragon Force, a few others. By and large though, it was outclassed in almost every way by both the PS1 and N64, even the Neo-Geo. The best thing about Saturn is the funky little system menu and the god-tier controller (when used for 2D games). It could have been a success if it had been given better branding, better graphics, and more games, but sadly it will forever stew in mediocrity.

Saturn has more games in total only if you count JP-only releases. Otherwise, N64 still has more. But total number is irrelevant because unlike Saturn, N64 actually had a lot of GOOD games, like Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Banjo-Kazooie, Star Fox 64, Perfect Dark, the list goes on. Saturn had practically nothing worth playing. It was a shitty console. That's all there is to it.

The Japs should've stuck with what they do best, and that is games with arcade sensibilities (twitch action, player skill, score based, high level of challenge), and they should've supported the console developers who also specialized in those types of games (Sega and Nintendo). They instead abandoned the companies that made them successful in order to capitalize on the 3D hypetrain, only to discover that they're not all that good at making those types of games. But now it's too late to go back, that bridge has been burned, and now we have a generation of gamers who never grew up playing arcade style games and they don't care because they never played enough of them to develop a taste for them. So now they're dead in the water.

Yes, the Wii dominated with arcade-style games, however, most of those games were very low budget shit you'd find on the iphone.

It was a half-assed attempt to return to their roots, to what made them successful in the first place. But what they need is a renaissance.

If I was Nintendo, my next console would be designed to revive classic arcade gaming. I'd buy Sega and recruit what's left of the arcade developers, round up all those old guys who're no longer getting any work, and I'd put them to work to reboot classic gaming. No more simulations, no more interactive movies, no RPGs. Just straight up balls to the wall arcade action games. And we'll emphasis the importance of 2d gaming with pixel art. No more boring polygons. We'll create a modern 2d powerhouse console.

Let's admit that 3d was a mistake, and let's put it in the past and move forward. Let's go back and create the true predecessors to the SNES and Genesis. We'll go back to the future!
