I don't know about that. The year Shenmue released on the Dreamcast, was the same year I lost my virginity. 2001 was a truly magical year and so I feel a stronger connection to Shenmue 1 than Shenmue 2.

There are parts of what became Shenmue II in the unreleased Saturn version, and there is footage of events post-S2 running on the DC engine.

If the DC hadn't died when it did we could have seen an entire series of games on it.

Only filthy casuals don't like Shenmue nor do they know the controls that well(as you've just admitted). I enjoyed it for everything it did. Which is why I was one of the backers for Shenmue 3. If people pretended to like it, no one would have bothered to fund Shenmue 3(over 6 million dollars).

Some of the reasons why I think this game was very popular:

Immersive, detailed world with lots of side activities to do

It played in Japan.

I basically don't know anyone who isn't into anime or japan who really liked this game. The game world is amazing, but really, all you do is talk to people, search for a mirror in your basement, beat up a few people with meh karate combat controls, and in the end, if you take too long, you get killed by Lan Di, or you get a "to be continued..." where you fuck off to Hong Kong.

Really disappointing when it comes to how the main questline plays.

People need to stop arguing this for technological reasons. The reason ps2/xbox/gamecube are not /vr/ is because adding them would bring too many recent shitty fanbases that would clog up the board. Persona 4 released in English in 2008, for example, that's not even a decade ago. unless we limited it by year it might not even by enough.

Shenmue 1 is comfier. I hated Hong Kong and Kowloon. The final part with Shenhua was nice, though it only lasted like an hour.
