Hey, this is a question I have for all outmoded consoles, so, I guess it pertains to consoles from every prior generation, back to the first.

What is the procedure for keeping consoles supplied with power? Especially consoles that have internal batteries or internal clocks or capacitors or whatever?

I have been using my 60 GB fat PS3 for PS1 games for a long time, and I just recently realized I have had it plugged in for almost 3 years basically uninterrupted because I have now had it unplugged for a month. It probably has internal batteries and whatnot.

Should we be keeping old consoles always plugged in, or unplugged and stored until we want to use them? I've heard, generally, keeping a console unplugged and stored is bad for them. I know with the Dreamcast, the internal rechargeable battery will for sure go dead if you just leave it unplugged for a long time and let it totally drain and never charge back up.

Don't wanna get a power goblin in the battery's data stream.

I never gave it much thought before, but now I'm curious. I have several old consoles plugged in and several more in storage.

Uh. This is a serious question, actually.

Power goblins are very serious

I keep my retro consoles unplugged when not in use. Not because I have any hard data but I'd rather not take some weird risk with a power surge or something like that.

For my old consoles I don't plan on using in the near term, I keep them boxed up if only so they won't gather as much dust as quickly.

Good idea keeping them boxed that way the soft data won't go stale. Would hate to have moldy data.

Can you seriously go fuck off? This was a legitimate thread and I didn't know if anyone had any knowledge on the matter.

Jesus Christ.

i dunno, a couple of power strips that are flipped off when you're not playing the game.

I have heavy surge protectors hooked up so.

>> No.4310221

I keep most of my stuff plugged in just so its ready to go when I get the urge to play whatever game. They are all on power strips with surge protections. Also I recently bought a Dreamcast from a co worker which had been boxed up for probably over a decade and sure enough the internal clock battery is dead and I can't be arsed to replace it.

I left my snes plugged in for 3 days once and the data wool caught fire and burned my shed down. Be sure to kiss your silicon sheep to sleep.

Emulation was invented specifically for tards like you.
Keeping a retro console plugged in usually won't do anything for you because turning it off cuts all power to the system. Any workaround to that is far beyond your capabilities.

Common sense would tell you it's OK to leave them plugged in as long as:

1. You use a mid-line or greater surge protector.

2. You use the console regularly.

3. There are no specific cautions against it in the machine's service manual.

You know, like literally every bit of electronics ever.

Consoles have internal clocks, internal batteries, LEDs that light up when plugged in or dormant in the case of more modern consoles.

It's pretty irritating to get people who say "Just leave them plugged in lol"

I've had my NES plugged in non-stop since 1986, my SNES since 1992, my N64 since 1997. You get the picture.
