Let's talk about early Windows games.

Early Windows games really are a crapshoot. Some of them work totally fine on Windows 7, others I've never been able to play despite looking up fixes online for hours. I guess virtual machines will be the best option as processing power increases.

Early Windows is pre-Windows 3. Not sure if they got any games but you can get Windows 3 running in DOSbox relatively easily so I don't think 1 or 2 would prove a problem.

>> No.4307107

Dust: A Tale of the Wired West is a first person adventure game by Cyberflix, the company that would use the same engine to make the Titanic game. I really liked this games sense of humor and multiple orders/routes that you could take to accomplish some of the tasks though you can get stuck later in the game if you don't complete a certain objective on the correct day. It only runs on Windows 3.1 so you'd have to install it through DOSBox, at least I did on my XP machine.

I've got my Win98 pc set up with a Voodoo 3 and everything, but after about 20 minutes of operation it suddenly shuts down.
When I set the computer up, I had to switch out the power supply because the original one didn't work. Since the PC shuts completely off with no warning, I suspect the power supply I switched in might be inadequate somehow.
Could this be caused by the power supply not being able to supply enough current?
My other thought was that it could be caused by overheating, but I underclocked the processor and it still crashes after a few minutes.

A lot of side-scrollers didn't, you still tended to get 2D stuff instead of weird arse 3D on a 2D background that you got slightly later on.

Posting Machine Hunter in a thread with TNP, it was a pretty cool idea for a game where you played a dude who could posses robots you'd damaged but not destroyed.

Fatal Racing/Whiplash - a racing game with some stunt elements and destructible cars. You can wreck your opponents, and you also have to manage your pit stops if you are not careful with the damage yourself.

Hellbender was made by Microsoft to showcase Windows gaming and directx. A demo came on the actual Windows 95 disc which I enjoyed playing from time to time even if I wasn't that good. Great music and voice work from Gillian Anderson.

>> No.4367110

>>4366681
I don't know if they are still manufactured anywhere, but there is tons of inventory remaining. I see unopened boxes of floppies at thrift stores and electronics stores all the time. They probably only sold a very limited run of that game on floppies anyway--how many do you think it was? Probably under 1000, and it would not be hard to get that many floppy disks at all. I probably still have about 100 in my basement, although I bet only 75% of them or so still work.

They became obsolete really fast. Even when people commonly used ZIP disks and things like that, 3.5 inch floppies were the only thing that was pretty much guaranteed to work on any computer. USB flash drives replaced them in that niche by the Windows XP era, so a lot of people (and businesses especially) had leftover boxes of floppies that they would never again need to use. That's lucky for retro computer enthusiasts, because there's enough of a supply that we don't have to treat flimsy-ass floppies like irreplaceable gold.
