That's a needlessly limiting mindset to have.

I agree that 9/10 romhacks suck ass, but the hacks that don't change the story or level design and only add QOL changes are usually pretty solid.

Not to sound like a dick but if you hate the weapon variety, you probably don't "get" it. Quake's weapon set is one of the best of any first person shooter because each weapon is best suited for a particular situation. One of the most common oversights by new players is that the shotgun is simply a shittier version of the double-barreled shotgun, which is actually the exact opposite of the truth. The regular shotgun has a tighter spread and only uses one shell as opposed to two, so for peppering enemies at a distance it's pretty much the best weapon in the game and saves a ton of ammo for more valuable guns. Conversely, if you're suddenly jumped by an enemy and backed into corner, pulling out the double shotty will be the preferred option because you'll want to take that fucker down as quickly as possible and avoid losing health, even if you waste a few extra shots. This is just an example of the many uses that each weapon has. It's easy to think "oh man, all these weapons suck, they're all just clones", but they're not. They each have a purpose, and that's why they're awesome. In most shooters, the guns all do the same exact shit with minor variations to damage or firing speed, and chances are you'll never need to use most of them. In Quake, chances are you'll be forced to use almost every weapon at some point. In this way, the weapons are more like tools than just guns.

Enemy variety I understand, but there are more than you think, and each one has entirely unique attack patterns and abilities.

I think you should try it again. Start out by playing on the hardest difficulty, and the game goes from "mowing down trash enemies with lame weapons, whoopdie doo", to "holy shit I wonder what the fuck is around this corner, what weapon should I use?". It's the thinking man's shooter. If all you want is flashy weapons and popcorn theater action, go play Halo. Otherwise, Quake is one of the best shooters ever made.

I'll admit that the standard nailgun is probably the only real "useless" weapon in the game, however it is worth noting that it can stagger enemies more frequently than the SN due to a slower rate of fire, so it might be preferable in some situations. Granted though, the SN has double the damage so 90% of the time it is probably the better weapon. Every other gun still has a specific use though.

I will forever praise FFII for having good story and characters for a NES game from 80s and I really respect what it tried to do. That said:

What's wrong with 2?
It's retarded "level up" system. In theory it sound great:
In theory attacking your enemies makes you better at using whatever weapon you used and occasionally gain str.
In theory taking physical damage makes you tougher by raising your HP and def.
In theory using magic makes the spells you used stronger and gives you more MP and mag. bonuses.

However in practice you are doing things like these:
-Choosing attack, immediately canceling it and doing this over and over again about 100 times per battle. This is bug/exploit allowing you to gain proficiency levels for the weapon type you are using.
-Hitting your own guys in hopes of getting more HP for them.
-Casting your spells over and over again to make them worth shit.

Also the main problem here is that you basically HAVE TO keep doing these exploit over and over again in every fucking battle to get strong enough just to survive the battles with the random enemies you come across. Oh, FFII is pretty non-linear meaning if you ever walk out of your way and go somewhere else instead of the place you are supposed to go changes are you encounter enemies that are way too strong for you and kill you instantly. And if you ever try to play FFII normally without using aforementioned exploits you are as good as dead and have grind forever to gain any stats at all.

What I typed is based on my experiences with the original Famicon and PSX versions of FFII, apparently the newer versions/remakes of FFII have been made slightly easier (or should I say more playable in this case) by increasing the stats gains, removing you occasionally LOSING your stats and making the enemies a bit weaker but you are still pretty much required to use all exploit you can in them. Anyway I REALLY wanted to like FFII but couldn't.

I don't hate it, but man, this felt like a step down from Quake 1 in every way imaginable. Gone was the unique medieval aesthetic, the chilling ambient soundtrack, the labyrinthine level design with secrets abound, and the glorious gibs. The guns don't even have muzzle flash, what the fuck? The weapons in general were just shit. They felt so weak, particularly the trash-tier regular shotgun which felt like I was shooting and reloading a nerf gun. Overall, just a slower, clunkier, less unique, less atmospheric game in almost ever way.
