How do you feel about modern game developers who emulate 8-bit style and gameplay /vr/?

pic related: looks pretty fun.

99% of them miss the point. Only 'retro' game to ever actually get it was cave story, and that game wasn't designed retro, pixel was just working with what he had.

It's stupid when it's just "Oh look how retro this is guys it's got squares and shit."
Otherwise it's the same as any other artstyle.

This particular one looks like it will be great. I am especially excited since the lady who composed MM1's soundtrack is helping. Pretty much as close as to MM11 as we'll ever get.

Very try hard. Shovel Knight? The fuck is that?

It just doesnt feel like it's retro, just like developers jumping on a bandwagon.

this one is actually great. Made by a lot of the guys who worked on Double Dragon Neon and it's a homage to Mega Man and Castlevania.

I think some of them do it poorly, and then the ones who do it proper, as in putting in actual effort into animations and world building design, get flack from retarded pieces of shit who parrot the goddamn opinion of "Oh another retard trying to peddle a retro style game, go away", it's fucking incredible how many times i've wanted to put my fist through the monitor for stuff that kept the style but looked incredibly well produced but then you see streams of comments come in that is THAT FUCKING OPINION.

>> No.429907

I think it's hilarious how they always try to do 8-bit since it's much easier than doing something 32-bit or 16-bit.

my favorite part is the total lack of understanding wrt. the limitations of 8-bit hardware.

This is probably the only one I've seen that actually looks and sounds retro. Like master system style

Shovel Knight might be cool, i heard its being made by people from wayfoward but i really don't understand why these guys prefer "8bit" than something like "16 bits" or something like the 2D in games from GBA, DS and PSP. Shit, they're getting funded and there's a lot of shit projects getting funded, money isn't so much a problem.

Because it evokes "retro" better and it's way easier.

Except Shovel Knight isn't 8-bit

I feel like most of them aren't really making those kind of games and mostly try to sell to the faux-retro "I'm such a nerd" crowd.
Particularly noticeable in the often retarded level design, but also in the graphics and general attitutdes to game design.

Thats why i wrote it "8 bits" and not 8 bits.

It takes maybe 5 minutes of reading a developer's manual to understand how to make NES-style (or any other style) graphics. I don't understand how people fail so miserably all the time.

What you linked looks pretty good though, aside from over-sized explosions and effects.

Please stop trying to advertise this on /vr/, thanks.
