4298240 No.4298240 [Reply] [Original] [archived.moe]

Turok 1 and Turok 2 are masterpieces. Turok 1 is super fast. Turok 2 is slow and plodding, and was likely a huge influence on Metroid Prime. Both have god-tier weapons, and the visual design is great. It's kinda sad how Turok 1 and 2 got remastered to little acclaim and middling sales. They deserve better. The bloom in the Turok 2 remaster is hideous, mind you.

The Turok 1 remaster is great. The Turok 2 remaster's shitty alterations can be turned off. They're overall good remasters. Oh, but the HUD art in the Turok 2 remaster? Terrible. It's clashes horribly with the game's art style and can't be toggled.

Turok 1 is cool because the team tried really hard to make an old school Quake clone for the N64 despite the limitations, so the remaster feels a lot like a lost pc game. On the N64 I was too busy raging at doing jumping puzzles at 15 fps and 30 fov to have fun with it.

Speeding up the enemies at higher difficulties is fucking goofy but at least it makes it so that you can't just strafe run by 90% of the enemies in the game.

I mean, Turok 1 was on the PC, too, back in the day. As was Turok 2. IMHO, they're a lot better than the Quake games they mimic. Better gunplay, better AI, and rich atmosphere.

personally i think turok 1 and 2 were far beyond anything quake offered at the time, turok 2 especially seemed like a culmination of all the things FPS in the 90s were trying to accomplish. within the framework of the classic "key hunt" style of fps started by doom and its ilk i don't think you can find an FPS that's much more perfect than turok 2.

>> No.4298927

Turok 3 is a strange game. Its biggest problem is that it screams "rushed". It's like Half-Life and System Shock 2 mashed together without any of the 'weight' the earlier Turok games had. It's got some pretty neat atmosphere and a great sense of rot and decay, but it's unpolished and the gunplay feels extremely unsatisfying. The bosses barely work. It's the Turok that needs a remaster/remake the most, IMO. It's clearly unfinished.

Turok 2 is the precursor to Metroid Prime. It's not really comparable to something like Unreal. Unreal has lots and lots of shooting. Turok 2's extremely good shooting happens sparodically. It's an hour of walking around and 5 minutes of shooting.

The way some of the dinosaurs lunge AROUND corners, and come at you is extremely nifty. At the time, most games had characters that would strafe around a corner, at best. One problem I have with the Turok 2 remaster is they didn't distinguish between unnecessary fog and fog used for atmosphere. For example, the first enemies that attack you in the game appear in a darkened corridor. It's brightly lit in the PC version. How exactly? Let's focus on PD for a moment.
>better graphics
>better/more music
>better controls and more control options
>singleplayer with objectives that change depending on difficulty, as well as co-op and counter-op, also much more difficult in general
>hundreds of unlockables
>vastly superior multiplayer in every single way
>more weapons with more unique functions
>huge slew of cheats, extra features, etc.
I mean, if you just subjectively prefer the game for no reason other than aesthetics, then I can't really argue with that. But on an objective basis, PD does everything turok does x10 better with x10 more content. I can't imagine what you'll tell me is better about turok that PD doesn't do other than a few gameplay mechanics.

Turok 2 came out less than 2 years before PD. Also, better animations? That's a fucking laugh. PD has the best animations of any game on the console.
>Objectively false.
Well let's see... PD includes turok's control scheme as a default, you can customize them further, and you can even use two separate controllers for dual analog. So not, objectively correct.
>GE and PD had a lot of guns but most of them were more or less the same with different sound effects. Like 5 different pistols with slight changes to their damage at best
So you haven't actually played the game then, since every gun one of the 30ish guns is distinctly unique. A machine gun that can turn into a remote sentry gun, a rocket launcher that can fire guided rockets, a grenade launcher that can fire sticky grenades, a sniper rifle that shoot through walls and track enemies, a plasma gun with explosive rounds, poison-tipped combat knives that can be used to slash or be thrown, tranquilizer gun that can make your enemies go insane and trip face, various types of different explosives, assault rifle that can be turned into a mine, machine gun that lets you turn invisible by draining ammo, various gadgets like x-ray goggles and combat boosts that slow down time, crossbow that can tranquilize or kill instantly... the list goes on. Turok has what, 12 or so weapons, and most of them are generic weapons list pistol, shotgun, knife, bow and assault rifle that don't do anything special. Pathetic.
>The rest doesn't make PD better. You know what Turok does better that makes it better? Fun gunplay.
If only it actually had that. Meanwhile, PD not only has better gunplay, but enough content to keep you playing for years. Try actually playing the game and maybe you'll find a new favorite.

turok was actually better than PD in some areas, your rabid defense of it and refusal to admit that it could be deficient in any way isn't winning anyone over to your side. this is coming from someone who owned every FPS the n64 had at the time of release. quit being biased just because its what you grew up with, they were all great games. in fact i think n64 had and still has one of the best libraries for FPS games on console

Maybe. Maybe not. But one thing's for sure, PD is not deficient in any way, shape or form, which is why it deserves rabid defense.
>quit being biased just because its what you grew up with
Lmao ironically, I actually didn't play PD until 2008 when I bought it for $3 at a yardsale on a hunch, well after I had already played Goldeneye, Timesplitters 2 and 3, Half-Life 2, Halo, Quake 3, and just about every other FPS in existence. It was such a good game that, despite its age, its quality still shone through and I realized how awesome it was. You're right about one thing though, the N64 does have the best FPS library of any console. And PD sits at the top.

off the top of my head for turok 2 vs pd: the graphical effects of weapons were better and more diverse, environments were better looking on average, there was more variety in enemy design, the enemy AI was more sophisticated, great boss battles whereas PD only had 1 boss that wasn't that great, underwater combat and swimming whereas PD had none, better sound design for weapons, better sound design for enemies in contrast to the same few quips and remarks from the enemies in PD.

these are just some objective ones that i thought of. i'm sure there's a lot more that a person could subjectively like about turok over PD, such as gameplay style etc. i'm sure if you actually gave the series a chance you'd end up liking it just as much as PD like i do

>> No.4301021

>>4301013
>the graphical effects of weapons were better and more diverse,
Like what? Smoking gun barrels and shells that fall out of the weapons as you shoot? Yeah, PD has that too. It also has some crazy shit like when you're using the FarSight and you reload it by touching an orb to the side and it absorbs it.
> environments were better looking on average
This is a flat out lie. Not only were they worse from a technical perspective (lower poly count, lower res textures, etc) but the actual environments themselves were extremely repetitive and had a limited color palette.
> the enemy AI was more sophisticated
Another flat out lie from someone who has never played PD, at least on Perfect Agent difficulty. It might very well have the best AI on the console. They duck, take cover, run away and come back to gang up on you, you can even shoot a weapon out of their hands and then they'll drop it, hop around injured for 10 seconds and then try to pick it back up. You have no idea what you're talking about.
>great boss battles whereas PD only had 1 boss that wasn't that great
Apples and oranges. PD is a realistic stealth shooter, boss battles aren't the point of the game. I'll give you this one, though.
>underwater combat and swimming whereas PD had none
Different gameplay style, not sure why this is a downside.
>better sound design for weapons
Lol no. Each of the 30+ weapons had a distinctly unique sound and were all very powerful and crisp. I might be willing to say the two are equal in this way, only because sound is pretty subjective, but better? Fuck no.
>better sound design for enemies in contrast to the same few quips and remarks from the enemies in PD.
Like what? A raptor screaming over and over? The enemies in PD will actually talk amongst one another, change what they say depending on the weapon you're holding, etc.

You're entitled to your opinion but what you've said here is factually incorrect and it sounds like you haven't played the game.

Oh man I forgot about this. I don't think most people even pay attention to small details like this. They just think "but dude, they're like, human enemies and stuff, dinosaurs are cooler". Perfect Dark was filled with special touches like this. Still haven't found a shooter as advanced to this day.

I love Turok 2, it's my fourth favorite FPS of all time, but what you're saying is just wrong.

>the graphical effects of weapons were better and more diverse
I agree that turok 2 weapons look great, but in PD they look equaly good and PD had like 3 times more weapons and different hands for each character.

>environments were better looking on average
both games have different kind of environments. While in Turok 2 they are bigger and have better lighting effects, in PD they have more objects and details. The difference is that in turok 2 the framerate suffers a lot.

>there was more variety in enemy design
True, but that's due to having different species in Turok 2, while in PD there were humans and other 2 races. All in all, the enemies in PD were not just bullet sponges and had better AI.

>the enemy AI was more sophisticated
not by a milestone. The AI in PD is so ahead of its time that I can't think of any game in the 6th gen that had something similar (maybe hitman). You can disarm enemies, make them run, make them fight back, make them limp when you shoot their limbs. Their gun may malfunction or they can beg for mercy. In turok 2 they just shoot at you pretty much.

>great boss battles whereas PD only had 1 boss that wasn't that great
I'll give you that.

>underwater combat and swimming whereas PD had none
the underwater parts were boring anyways. PD is better without it.

>better sound design for weapons
try harder. Weapons in PD have the most memorable sounds. Anyone who has played it can recognize the weapon just by listening to it fireing or reloading.

>better sound design for enemies in contrast to the same few quips and remarks from the enemies in PD.
You're a troll or you just have never played perfect dark.

All the little things you take for granted, like every character having a unique set of hands and the difficulty actually changing the level layout, are things which are just absent in 99% of shooters and you have to wonder why. People don't care about PD and appreciate the amazingly intricate details because all they care about are shitty realistic shooters with ironsights and sprinting.

The N64 was trully a beast when it comes to FPS. Pic related is my collection.

Perfect Dark without a doubt was the best, both in single player and multiplayer.

Goldeneye had a great single player campaign but I think the multiplayer is overrated. When Perfect dark or 007 Twine came out most people already forgot the N64 existed.

007 twine has a better multiplayer then Goldeneye. The only think I hate is how you must unlock the customization options by playing through the campaign (and have to save in the controller pak)

Turok 1 had a more consistent campaign then turok 2. The first 3 levels in turok 2 are amazing but then the game goes downhill once you get to the lair of the blind ones. Turok 3 is a poor attempt to copy half life, and turok rage wars was a poor attempt to copy quake arena.

quake 1 is a good port, while quake 2 is a different version from the pc and ps1 version. Not many people know about that.

Doom 64 is the true doom 3. It's one of the best doom ever made.

duke nukem 64 I don't care much about the campaing (the lack of music is stupid) but the multiplayer with a bunch of friends is fun as hell!

Daikatana is so-so. Not as bad as people say. Just mediocre and a bunch of broken promises.

rainbow six is so much fun in coop.

south park is bad... really bad. Probably the worst FPS on the N64.

Hexen is a good port. Really fun to play coop in 4 players.

Armorines had so much potential, but is also mediocre.
