What are your favorite JRPGs with a female protagonist/female protagonists in a JRPG?

this is definitely the first that comes to mind and probably objectively the best if you can get past the long exposition and tragedy of the week segments (some of them have monsters and shit and are pretty cool though).

Wild Arms 3. Virginia Maxwell is a breath fresh air in that she's just portrayed fucking normally, as opposed to some weakling damsel or a carpet-munching dyke which are so common from Japan.

FF6 was pretty badly written. Terra whines about how powerless she is throughout the entire story. Celes would have made a better lead character.

So I wasn't the only person in the world to play this. Naga is really the best character.

>> No.4295449

>>4295408
"powerless" is wrong, she was just confused due to the brainwashing, killings and because she realized she was different from everybody else being an Esper and all that. When did she ever not use her power? She battles all the time although she doesn't really want to but it's not the same as powerless. In fact, she was afraid of her powers.

>> No.4295553

>>4295449
>She battles all the time

Except in cutscenes, which is what makes her characterization even more retarded. Between her innate sorceress powers and her latent esper powers, Terra still acts like she can't make an ounce of difference to the resistance, insisting on standing aside while her male companions usher the party to safety. Terra ends up being a figurehead and nothing more.

It's bad writing. I think the scenario's creator just wanted Terra to be his perfect waifu, and he couldn't do that by giving Terra any agency.

I don't know what you're talking about, and I am about the opposite end of the spectrum from a SJW that one can get. Perhaps I used wrong terminology. I mean female characters from japan usually only come in two models: the damsel in distress, or ACTION GIRL, with far too few female characters who fall in between the two extremes. Virginia Maxwell is the only female JRPG protagonist I can think of who also doesn't fit within the two aforementioned tropes.

>> No.4295598

Terra has no reason to care. None of those people are her people. She has no people. She lives in a world deprived of any meaning or orientation. She doesn't even really feel guilty about killing people or anything, she just doesn't know what to feel about it period.

Whether the empire wins or the resistance wins, it doesn't make much difference to her at all. She's not of the same world, or of any world., because she's caught in-between with nobody else really being like her.

He's essentially "The Female" reversed while Terra & Celes are the leads with Terra as the Protag. Terra is the first you plays as (Back when that mattered) and is integral to the plot. She's also the only one to get a special sprite during the ending.

And if Locke was, he'd be in marketing for the leads of the series. Nor is he playable in Dissidia, in Record Keeper is mediocre, and Brave Exvius he's a trash unit that can't get to max rank At best he gets marketed as the "VI Boy" when they don't want to use Setzer, Edgar, or Sabin.

>> No.4296704 [DELETED]

Terra has a large role but she just isn't the protagonist. You don't follow her althroughout the story and she doesn't make a significant impact on where the narrative goes. They did a similar ensemble thing with FFXIII with Lightning have the most promos but isn't really the protag.

Terra is literally the entire plot prior to WoR, and everything after WoR is unfocused twattle in regards to plot.

>> No.4296719

>>4296704
By your logic, neither is Locke. Best comparison for Locke is Balthier, a proxy for a greater plot point (Locke to the Returners - Balthier with his father). I disagree on Terra not being important, her joining the Returners is what leads to the fight back, the connection with the Esper World, and giving the reality of what it is that everyone is fighting for. She is also key to how the Empire gained power in the first place.

Neutrally, neither Terra nor Locke are required to get to beat the game in the World of Ruin.

And just because Vanille is the narrator, doesn't mean that Lightning isn't the protagonist.

There are many JRPGs with female protagonists, especially those with character choice which includes gender so it's a bit hard to choose, but just to make a few examples of definite female protagonists I like:

Liza(Front Mission 2)
Lenneth(Valkyrie Profile)
Sif(Romancing SaGa)
Katarina, Ellen(Romancing SaGa 3)
Asellus, Emilia(SaGa Frontier)
Minerva(Princess Minerva)
Dela(Brandish series)

Though there are many games which lets you have a main character with gender choice, like some Dragon Quests, SMT If..., Mystic Ark, Romancing SaGa 2 and so on, but in most of them there's really no difference between genders other than design and stats, so I just skip those and also those with "generic" character creation like Zill O'll, which have nevertheless good female MCs.

I disagree that VI takes a nosedive in WoR. It's more that it drastically changes subgenres and goes from a linear cinematic experience to a fairly open world with a checklist of quests to complete. The latter is different, and more like earlier JRPGs or even WRPGs, but it isn't a nosedive.

It's the first game I ever replayed as soon as I finished it.

>>4298775
The only retro FFs that are really guilty of that is VII and VIII, honestly. At their end game your characters just end up homogenized. With FFVI, if you're in a situation where all your characters are just spamming Ultima then you spent the effort to teach multiple characters Ultima from the one Esper that grants you the spell at a rate of 1. If you're doing that then you what do you expect?

You should try Brave New World if you want FFVI with a gameplay overhaul. It does a good job of specializing the cast and making every character valuable.
