if you have a model 2 (round buttons), you just plug the cd drive's ribbon cable into the modchip, plug the modchip's ribbon cable into the saturn's mobo, and solder a wire for power to a giant pin that is surrounded by plastic (impossible to fuck it up, even if you suck at soldering). That's it.

You also usually need to bridge two of the contacts on the modchip itself for some reason, which is really easy since they're next to one another and you don't even need to use a wire, just throw some solder on both and drag it across to connect them

Even that's a huge exaggeration. We got Guardian Heroes, NiGHTS, Panzer Dragoon, Astal, Dragon Force, Magic Knight Rayearth, Albert Odyssey, Saturn Bomberman, Burning Rangers, and Die Hard Arcade off the top of my head. That's still a fairly impressive variety of games.

I mean, yeah, we got shafted on things like not getting the better original versions of Silhouette Mirage and Grandia, the better versions of the Lunar remakes, Princess Crown, Super Tempo, Shining Force III part 2 and 3, Dragon Force 2, shmups like Radiant Silvergun, Thunder Force V, the Gradius collection, and Keio Flying Squadron 2 (Probably a bunch of other shmups but I'm not really well versed in the genre to know)

People seem to have this misunderstanding that the Japanese-exclusive titles are an absolute necessity to even enjoy the system when that's simply not true. It helps a lot, obviously, but you can still definitely make do with what got translated.

It's nothing compared to the absolute shit support NEC gave the TurboGrafx 16 in comparison to what came out on the PC Engine in Japan.

Gradius collection, Salamander collection, every single Parodius game that existed (minus that strategy sidegame). Parodius Collection at least got a PAL release. Cotton 2 and Boomerang are also awesome, Cotton Boomerang especially so, one of the most impressive 2d shmups.

Also, arcade perfect Street Fighter Alpha 3, X-Men vs Streetfighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs Streetfighter, Cyberbots, and Darkstalkers 3. And the best non-neogeo and non-emulated port of Metal Slug 1.

Shit, the Saturn in japan only outlived the usa by a year and a half anyway. They should've just not make a Dreamcast until 2000 at least; then the Saturn would've had 10x better looking games by the end.

One day I'll make a pic of all my Saturns piled ontop of each other, but not right now. It's 1AM, I just spent 4 hours disassembling a and photographing a Saturn Karaoke Commander (SKC-1000, look it up) and it's only halfway done, and all but six of my Saturns are in bubblewrap packages (and out of that six, two are non-working, and two are properly boxed).

Here's an old picture. I've sold some of these since, but bought many others. Yes, my desk is from IKEA, that's why it looks so shit.

I'm trying to hunt down every different type motherboard used in Saturns, there were like 40 or 50 in total. I almost have all PAL machines by now though!

Quick question. I bought a saturn, and it will turn on. But, it won't read disks.

I've tried raising the spindle, I've cleaned the entire thing, I've reconnected the ribbon cables, and tried adjusting the power on the laser itself. The system goes to the main menu, but anytime I put in ANY cd's, it just flashes "reading disk format" over and over.

Do I just need a new laser assembly? When I turn it on, I can see the laser turn on though. I can buy another one no problem, but don't wanna spend the money if it won't fix it.

I've already explained:
>I'm trying to hunt down every different type motherboard used in Saturns

Plan is to make photos of each, do a gallery, and write guides on how to mod them (region, modchip, 50/60hz, toslink, etc). Do comparisons, test compatibilities, make a list on when each machine was made, etc etc.

However right now I found employment, which means I'm buying more machines then I have the time/power to do photoshoots of.

And in the mean time, I'm playing them on my 42" plasma, or an old Sony projector I got from my sister.

>> No.432657

>>432520
Have you tried cleaning the actual motherboards with isopropyl alcohol? I bought many Saturns as junk/nonworking, and a 15 minute clean wipe later they all worked flawlessly.

Make sure all cables are properly plugged etc. If the cubes in the CD player are miscolored/sized on default boot, then the CD drive is not connected or powered properly.

Raising the spindle is one thing, but if you raise it too high it again won't see the disc. There is a sweet spot to it.
Same for adjusting the laser power. In fact you should not do that unless as a last resort, since you need an oscilloscope to properly calibrate that, otherwise you might set it too high and end up shortening its lifespan.

Your best bet would be buying a new Saturn and swapping out the laser assemblies between the two, to see if it's the laser at fault or something else. The lasers cost quite a lot, and it's easy to find good Saturn deals on ebay.

If the laser is continuously moving up and down, and shining red, then it is actually trying to read the disc in. If that takes too long (even on audio CDs, not just Saturn ones), then it is entirely possible that it is worn out or broken. However out of the 20-30 Saturns I've owned/fixed/modded so far, only two had worn out lasers. Almost every single other one can in fact read BROKEN discs.

Consolegoods sells 20pin chips. You'll have to email the guy cause he can't publically list them due to paypal complaining. I've tested them in all but 2-3 very uncommon CD drives, and they work in everything but the Sanyo drives. For those, you need the old EMSIC7-1 type chips which he also sells.

Oddly, the prototype of his chips works with the Sanyo drive, but the final ones didn't.

Also, model 1 and model 2 says fuck all of the hardware inside: There are over 14 different motherboards, spanning over 4 different CD drive families, and about 12 different drives in total. Many model 1s and model 2s have the same type of boards in them, Sega was reusing old stock in new cases to get rid of them.

Yeah, I feel bad for anyone who buys a model 2 saturn looking to mod it only to find a 64-pin board inside.

Though someone did figure out that you can tell if a model 2 has a 32 pin board by looking at the vent holes at the bottom: if the wholes are partially obstructed by the internal metal casing the board is mounted to, it's a 32 pin. If the holes fit flush (you can't see the metal), it's a 64 pin.

>Why in the world would a console go through so many hardware redesigns?

1. to make manufacturing simpler, faster (0th generation Saturns were insanely fucking oddly assembled for example)

2. cost reduction (better PCB designs, combining several ASICs into one, etc)

3. reusing old stock more efficiently (even if you make a new combined ASIC that is cheaper to use, you still have to sell your old stock)

4. separate board designs for USA, JPN, an PAL machines. Halfway throughout they made USA and JPN machines use the same boards with different jumpers and bios rom, though. PAL machines also skipped through some hardware generations.

5. a Saturn specific thing: motherboards of even generation numbers used SD RAM, while odd ones used SGRAM. So a lot of extra board types were made just because of that. VA6 and VA7 are identical except that VA6 uses SGRAM, VA7 uses SDRAM, and so on for all boards starting from VA2 and up.

There were 16 generations in total, labelled VA0 to VA15. VA12 and 14 were never released, either because SGRAM supplies dried up by the time, or because they were too costly, The final board was VA15, and it had a single dual core SH2 instead of two single ones.

>> No.432949

>>432916

But still, it just seems surprising. Retooling a manufacturing process isn't cheap, so there must have been considerable savings involved.

Also, your #5 reason sounds weird. Why did they do that? Was there a legit engineering reason? Or was it just based on fluctuations in ram prices?

Because the second you get rid of one of your spares, like I did, the optical will fail on the one you kept and you will drive 2 hrs and pay some asshole $50 for a working unit. I have 3 in a closet now against this possibility; the Saturn was the last console I bought before last year when I finally broke down and bought a 360 to play Silent Hill: Downpour.

That being said...I am surprised no one has mentioned Astal...I always thought its was one of the last great 2D sidescrollers, with absolutely gorgeous music (that was all generated on the Saturn's audio hardware!) and was quite challenging to boot.

>>432808
>Though someone did figure out that you can tell if a model 2 has a 32 pin board by looking at the vent holes at the bottom:

Or you can read the serial number, which tells you the EXACT hardware generation. As long as the machine didn't change cases.
Syntax is:
- manufacturer ID (one or two characters)
- year (one char)
- hardware gen number (one char, numbers first, then letters for VA10+ boards)
- serial number of that run (6 numbers).

hardware gen number is the VAx number.
VA0-1 used 20pin drives,
VA2-5 used 21/64pin drives,
VA6-9 used 21/32pin drives,
VA10-15 used a later revision of the above.

Sometimes the hardware gen number is omitted, but I've only seen that in VA0 USA machines. Also, sometimes you have an extra 9 between the year and the hardware gen, those are officially refurbished machines.

This system applies to practically all Sega hardware more or less, except for V-Saturns (and JVC X-eye / Wondermega), Samsung Saturns, and the NAVI Saturn.

Here's a list you can use for references:

All my saturns can read BROKEN DISCS. Sometimes the loading times are longer, if the break in the disc makes the sides uneven.
These optics just don't fail easily.

Astal looked nice for a launch game, but I never found it too interesting. I liked Keio Flying Squadron better, because it's just too fucking batshit crazy to not like it, even if it's frustrating to play.
I've been meaning to check Super Tempo too, heard only good things from that.

>>432949
>Also, your #5 reason sounds weird. Why did they do that? Was there a legit engineering reason? Or was it just based on fluctuations in ram prices?

They either got a way good deal on SGRAM, or couldn't get SD RAM in a big enough volume at the time. I couldn't imagine any other reason.
What is even odder is that PAL machines only ever had SD RAM boards. I'm thinking they didn't have a license to use SGRAM there, or fell into some patent problem, I dunno. Very strange regardless.

>>432808
>Yeah, I feel bad for anyone who buys a model 2 saturn looking to mod it only to find a 64-pin board inside.

See funny thing is, if a modchip works for 32pin, it has to work on 64pin too, since the grand total difference between the two is 1 pin being double routed on the 32pin drive. The communication interface itself never changed, that's why you can mod any chip to work in 20pin machines too, you just need to route the pins properly.

There is also that idiocy where guides tell you to take a clock signal pin from one of the drive ICs. Which is completely retarded, because that clock signal pin goes directly into the ribbon cable!! Pin 1 on 21pin machines, pin 6 on 20pin ones.

It seems to me that no one actually bothered to sit down and check the differences between multiple machines, and so we have every single site on the net reporting stupid bullshit. Another reason why I want to collect/test every Saturn.

Broken saturn guy again.

I tried cleaning the whole thing, alcohol and everything. And it's still doing it. Just keeps flashing "reading disk format."

The cubes are grayish-brown when the door is open, and green when I close it. When it's flashing, the whole screen seems to lag a bit, and the animations on the buttons kinda lag too.

I've cleaned the shit outta this thing 3 times now, and I've checked every possible connection. I even bought new power and AV cords for it.

Any diagnosis? I know a place I can get a replacement laser, but it's for JVC boards I think. How do I tell if mine is a JVC board or whatever? Because I also know where I can get one for Sanyo boards.

1. It has a relatively small world and relatively short story to it (especially compared to todays games, but even when compared to, say, Final Fantasy 7). But what there is, destroys every other game in the amount of detail and beauty put into it. And the fighting system is unique.

2. get SSF, it's an emulator for the PC, I played the game on it back in 2007 - as long as you have a decent machine, it'll run fine on it.

You are better off getting a Saturn and a modchip though, because SSF can be complicated and there are still some games that don't work for it.

The UK got fewer Saturn variants than the US did, but it should be. Remember, the system itself should have the same internal power requirements. The power board in the system is what converts your home voltage into something smaller that the console can digest. Should work, but I have no idea where to get a UK Saturn power board. Might be easier to just get a stepdown converter.

>any advice for someone in a PAL territory who wants to get a saturn and region free/play backups on it? Saturns tend to be fairly pricey where I live so I want to plan out my purchase.

Add a 50/60hz switch and a region free bios. Or, instead of the bios, add a modchip and burn regionmodded copies. I do the latter because I don't have a ROM burner nor a heat gun to desolder the standard bios.

Action Replay is only an intermediate solution. It does not allow you to save on the cart from games, only to the internal memory. You have to copy your saves onto the Action Replay from its own menu. So it is kind of useless for some games that do bigger saves. You also have to go through its ugly startup menu, and a few SNK games that need 1mb ram carts are broken on it (they are broken with all 4mb ram carts).
So you are better off burning your regionmodded games and using a normal save cart. Except for the handful of games that need the 4mb ram cart, for those the Action Replay is a good idea.

>>446695
>You can put a UK power board in a US Saturn without replacing the whole system. 8 screws.

You can, but keep in mind that there are 3 different power supply form factors for the Saturn. You need to find a matching one. But why the hell would you want to use a US Saturn when PAL ones are dead easy to mod for 60hz?

Also, NTSC saturns need aftermarket SCART cables because they have a slightly different video pinout.

For the Megadrive 1, it's piss easy, as you have jumper points on the motherboard, and you can handle all 3 positions with 1 switch. (it won't allow you to use JPN/50 but why would you need that anyway).

Megadrive 2 and 3, it is more complicated, as there are no premarked jumper points on most of their boards, so the process is different on a board type basis (MD2 had at least 5 revisions, MD3 had at least 2). I think you still can do it with only 1 switch for all 3 regions tho.

If you can handle a solder iron, you won't end up breaking the system. You just have to solder 3 cables from the motherboard to a switch.

You realize it was one game broken into two parts due to executive meddling, right?

Of course you don't.

>Because Sega of America went full retard with the Saturn

You can thank Bernie Stolar for that. Just think how different gaming might have been if he stayed at Sony.

>> No.456792

Everyone seems to blame Bernie for this, but basically SEGA of America said "here Bernie, we're pulling the plug on the Saturn and start working on a new console, try to give it a painless death as possible as you can"
He couldn't do dick nor shit, SEGA just wanted to quickly move on to the Dreamcast, which he did a great job at, a great launch and everything, but at that point the consumers didn't have any trust and SEGA anymore and its demise was inevitable.

Uh-huh. And why were they pulling the plug on the Saturn again? Right.

He pulled the plug on his own, and had a terrible localization policy. Working Designs had to fight to be able to release anything.

Try breaking 10 million points in it.
Suddenly it won't be that easy, even with autofire.

Don't feel bad, OP. I don't have any games for it or the console itself.

I reeeeaaaallly want one. Same goes for the Neo Geo, TG-16, and Master System. I have pretty much every other retro console of note, though.

As someone who's collecting old school shooters there's a few I'm trying to get:

Powerslave
Aliens trilogy
Congo

Also not a first person shooter but still a good game is resident evil.

I heard the saturn version of resident evil is unique, has some nice game mode the psx version doesn't have. Anyone here go any of these games I mentioned?

>> No.463573

>>463113
I burned PowerSlave and Alien Trilogy.

Both seem like they'll be good.

>> No.463984

Just picked up a working Saturn (with all hookups and a controller), the 3D controller, and four games for 50 bucks. Did I do good?

Additionally, of the four games, Virtua Fighter 2 and Daytona USA I know, but are "Bug!" or "Galactic Attack" any good?

Where'd you get the "super clear nice case"?

I have a few loose Saturn games around that I'd like to put in a case, and that would come in handy.

Played Alien Trilogy back in the day. It feels like a Doom clone mostly, but it has amazing atmosphere, and dat tension.

Bug is a forgettable 2D platformer that I admittedly haven't played in somewhere close to a decade and remember very little of and Galactic Attack is actually a localization of RayForce, a pretty awesome Taito shmup that if I remember right has a mode that lets you flip your TV sideways for proper 3:4 display.

>> No.464063

>>464040
Guess I'll just have to try Bug! out when I can. Galactic Attack/RayForce sounds sweet, and the "flip your TV" thing sounds like Gunbird 2 (which I played on DC). Alright, sounds like I'm in for a treat. Thanks!

Alien Trilogy is on basically every platform of the time, but unfortunately I lost my Windows version so I can only comment on the PS1 version (in dat longbox case). Graphics are Doom style, and very atmospheric. Music is amazing. But damn the controls are so stiff. Don't play it on the hardest difficulty, you'll lose half your health trying to turn around. Its definitely a slow paced, almost survival-horror style shooter. Its basically a budget game, so there's no reason not to pick it up. And also Road Rash, another awesome multiplatform title.

I don't know why Trilogy is so rarely mentioned though. Its way better than that obscure Jaguar Aliens game that gets brought up all the time.

Bug is a love it or hate it game. It's pretty fun when it isn't being frustratingly hard. Also, it's pretty damn long.

VF2 is a classic, and Galactic Attack is one of the better shmups released overseas. If you play it with rotated screens, it has a lot of extra graphical effects.

Daytona USA is a bad port. Granted, not as bad as House of the Dead or Sega Touring Car.
