Game music more often than not mimics whatever is trendy at the time, the favorite genre of the composer, or whatever direction the composer is given.

90s will get you all sorts of stuff depending on which side of the decade the game leans towards. Early 90s has a sound, and so does Mid 90s. Where the game is from is also important. You'll hear stuff like new jack swing, house, jungle, trance, big beat, grunge, jazz fusion, thrash metal, R&B (there's the really poppy stuff, and then there's the jazzy soulful variety), punk rock, garage, etc. You even get strange mixtures of rock and techno, downtempo, and shibuya-kei.

Japanese version had better music actually composed for the game. It doesn't sound like a cheerleader routine when you play it.

It was just a response to the OP mentioning Sonic games, which used the sound chips of the Genesis which are not to everyone's tastes. However, I do think some good sound and music can be produced from them.

Every time I hear the music to the Sonic CD menu, all I can think of is a robotic-like voice using these non existent lyrics that include the words "The Situation" from The Jersey Shore. I know, it's stupid but I imagine it sounding like that every time.
