Was this character actually necessary? And why are there so many stupid moments in this game, like this one? Who did care about him at this point?

Was the game in general necessary?

Though I also kinda get that you'd want some comic relief party members in your game about playing as eco-terrorists with a protag that suffers PTSD.

>Was this character actually necessary?
Well, he does join for real and give you information Shinra later on.
>And why are there so many stupid moments in this game, like this one?
Define "stupid"? It's a very surreal game that gets away with lots of crazy shit, and I applaud them for even trying to recreate any of it in a HD remake.
>Who did care about him at this point?
You don't have to care. In fact, that's kind of the point; the game intentionally sets up a stupidly inconsequential "death" to make the actual death later on more shocking.

PTSD?
I think you mean "memory loss" that Tifa could have literally saved lives by mentioning to others.

When you're at Kalm and Cloud is telling the story of his past and Tifa decides not to tell anyone that he has the story wrong, and Cloud decides to pursue a course of action based on information that she knows to be wrong...

...And this wrong information literally gets people fucking killed

Tifa is a fucking retard

How exactly?

Who should she tell, and what it would change?

Unnecessary

- Red
- Vincent
- Yuffie
- Tifa
- Cid

I think you could make a valid argument for all of those except Tifa. Cloud wanting to impress her was literally the catalyst for him joining the military (along with the other psychological issues that drove him), which led to him killing Sephiroth then being detained with Zack, which brought him to the beginning of FFVII. Then, she of course had to be the one to help him through coming to terms with reality and bucking up to finish off Sephiroth/JENOVA.

Or are you just a salty AeriSfag?

Tifa is a literal terrorist. I don't think she would care about a few people dying, especially since she was involved in blowing up a fucking power plant.

Cait Sith is the only good party member, so yeah, totally necessary.

>> No.4286087

Cait Sith would have been better existing only a summon. It is just too silly to accept a robot cat AI can join the team and then double as a secret spy. Instead of Reeve being the Shinra defector they should've made it one of the Turks who you get to have on your team. That would have been a lot cooler.

>It is just too silly to accept a robot cat AI can join the team and then double as a secret spy
It makes perfect sense, though. He was a Golden Saucer attraction. Shinra / Turk intelligence knew Cloud and his party would be at that location, so an animatronic casino attraction was a perfectly logical way to infiltrate Cloud's group.

>they should've made it one of the Turks who you get to have on your team
Reeve was an inside man, not simply a defector. How could a Turk defect to Cloud's party and simultaneously pass on developing information from Shinra or other Turks? There's no way they could serve Cloud's party and the Turks at the same time. Hence Reeve's moogle bot.

I think I remember reading somewhere that Cloud, Barret and Aeris were originally the only playable characters.
I like JRPGs with small casts like that, everyone has more time to develop and you don't have to agonize over levelling/equipping a whole bunch of people.

Three is just too small though. 6 is nice for a 3 man team since you can rotate them out or split up into two groups.

Her importance is providing the facts behind Cloud's history. Unless she's doing kung-fu to save people at critical moments all the backstory stuff she provides might as well just be in cutscenes.

>not needed as playable character
Yeah, maybe if you rewrite the script, and change the whole story.
Tifa was required to check up on Cloud every now and then to see that he won't turn into a psycho.

Also she was a temporary leader while Cloud was away, did you forget? Barret was too weak of a character to fill that role, being torn apart and too emotional.

Tifa was fourth most important character, it wouldn't make sense. You could shift it into 4 players character game(like in other FF), Barret would be tank, Aeris mage, Tifa thief/monk and cloud atacker.

But FF7 would be a totally different game. Much of the surrealism was delivered becouse of the secondary characters. It wouldn't be the same game without conformist Red(i think his character got lost in the translation),absurd Cait Sith and Cid the wife beater.

The least significant characters were Vincent and Yuffie. And guess what? They were optional and quite easy to miss.
